#3 SJB Makes Some Noise
A road game at #6 Chaminade is  tough.  Small, noisy gym and the home team can play. St. John The Baptist was unfazed. They battled the Flyers and the crowd from the opening tip, jumping ahead and staying there.  Prentice Small fought through one defender after another, scoring 32 points but he had help. Josh Elbaum had 13 points and turned in some superb defensive work and every one of  Rob Griffin's four 3 pointers seemed like a big one. SJB looked very good and picked up a huge road win. Final score 78-64. 1/19

                 Looking Ahead
Hempstead seems well on their way to capturing a league title until you look closely at their schedule. They are off to a great start at 7-0, but their next 3 games are @ Elmont,  @ Uniondale and @ Baldwin ! Second place Uniondale is feeling pretty good about that. With just one league loss and 5 of their next 6 at home, they should. Same for Baldwin, with just two league losses! Six of their eight remaining games are at home. That's not to say that Hempstead won't have equal success on the road, but they'll really have to take it up another notch to make it  through unscathed. .....Jericho is feeling a little better about their remaining schedule after taking a few lumps on the road so far. No game is easy in A1 this season, but it helps to have 5 out of your remaining 7 at home........Can anybody stop East Hampton and Wyandanch in league play? Not likely.  East Hampton still plays @ Eastport SM, Islip, and Huntington but the only one that came close the first time through was Islip and the Bonackers played possibly their worst game of the year and still won by 10. Wyandanch has now faced their two toughest competitors on the road and beat them both easily. Hard to imagine them losing at home. Port Jefferson hosts them on the 25th and they have a young team that is getting better quickly. They upset Babylon the other day, but Wyandanch is not Babylon.

                   1/17 Highlights
Terrell Holloway  missed his second straight game for #4 Hempstead, a 58-46 win over Freeport. Lyron Williams came through with a career-high 29 points..... Great Neck South pulled away in the 4th quarter to pick  up an important 66-53 road win over Bethpage.... Roosevelt blew open a tight game in the 4th quarter of a 70-54 win over Roslyn. Quincy Hankins led the way with 24 points.....Corey Jackson tied it for Upper Room and Jorge Moreno put back the winner with five seconds left against Our Savior Lutheran.....Division upped their conference record to 5-0 with a 53-45 win over Mineola. A  15-6 3rd quarter was the difference..... Chris Woolfson stole the ball and scored with two seconds remaining to give Mepham a one point win over Herricks.......Brian OToole put them ahead with a basket and then Quamel McLaurin iced it with two free throws in Long Beach's 43-40 over Port Washington...... Tied at the half, #10 South Side got some breathing room with a 21-13 third quarter and went on to beat Westbury 52-44 on the road. Pat Croutier was back in the line-up.......

             St. Dom's By Eleven
#1 St. Dominic struggled against the St. Mary's press at times, but  the intense up and down action it generated meant lots of free throw opportunities for both teams. The Bayhawks hit most of their shots - especially down the stretch - and #7 St. Mary's did not. It added up to a big 71-60 road win for St. Dominic.                         1/16

Long Road For Bayport - Blue Point
Bayport-Blue Point is well on their way to another excellent season, compiling a 9-2 record with big wins over  Amityville, John Glenn  and Central Islip already under their belts. Its even more impressive when you consider that they will have no real home games this season. Their gym, which is being renovated, is not and will not be available to them so they've been playing their scheduled home games at local college gyms. Right now, it looks like their last 3 "home" games against Amityville, John Glenn, and Westhampton. will be at the Dowling gym.

        Coach Adams Wins 450th
Legendary Hempstead Coach Ted Adams won his 450th career game last night when his 6th ranked Tigers defeated MacArthur 72-52. Coach Adams has overcome a troubled school district and player defections to private and catholic schools to lead his Hempstead team back to prominence this season and to numerous State Championships and Long Island Championships over the years. A deserving member of the New York State Basketball Hall of fame,  he has earned untold numbers of coaching awards and community service awards and is a beloved member of the Hempstead community. Congratulations Coach!.

                   1/13 Highlights
Looks like Prentice Small did not play in SJB's 63-53 win over Holy Trinity. Rob Griffin stepped up with 6 three pointers.....Rodney Nicholson's last second shot gave Patchogue-Medford a 45-43 win over Brentwood......Jamal White's two free throws with 39 seconds left gave Roosevelt the lead for good in a 72-69 win over Westbury.....Chris Ryder's basket at the buzzer gave Port Washington a 40-39 win over Plainview.
                         1/12 Highlights
#10 Uniondale trailed by 8 with 4 minutes remaining but came back to defeat #16 Baldwin 56-53. Travis Simms tied it with a free throw and Steven Priestly's layup gave the Knights the lead.......Byron Freeman had 21 points to lead #9 St. Mary's over #5 St. Anthony's 71-51. The Gaels pulled away in the 2nd half.....#14 Jericho rallied in the 2nd quarter, outscoring West Hempstead 15-4 on their way to a 56-44 victory. Brian Kahn led the Jayhawks with 20 points and 11 rebounds .....Sachem East surprised Longwood 66-63 in overtime. Jim Turner, who tied the game in regulation with a 3 pointer, led East with 11 points.

          Big Weekend For Hoops
Martin Luther King Jr weekend is always full of first rate hoops action, and this year is no exception. So load up the kids or call a few buddies and take your pick of some great games: Things kick off Friday at 4pm when #1 St. Dominic visits #7 Chaminade. Chaminade is always a tough place to play, and the Flyers are playing very well right now. Saturday at 1 PM  its #16 Baldwin @ Malverne. Malverne has already pulled off some big upsets this season and is knocking on the Sweet 16 door.  Is Baldwin next? Sunday, head over to LI Lutheran for three games involving top teams from Long Island against teams from the City. At 12:45 PM LWA plays Monroe, then at 2:30 PM its #7 Chaminade again, this time against Forest Hills, and then the last game at 4:15pm is host and 4th ranked LuHi vs. JFK of the Bronx. Heading into the City? The Big Apple Invitational at Baruch in Manhattan has top teams from all over the region playing, highlighted by #1 St. Dominic facing Linden, NJ at 5:45pm. Monday, its Freeport's annual MLK event and two more good games.  Game 1 is at 1pm and it matches Kellenberg and Roosevelt and game 2 at 3pm has host Freeport against Carey.

        #4 LuHi Clips Kellenberg
It always takes time to develop chemistry, but it really looks like LI Lutheran has started to put it together over the last few games.  The Crusaders rallied from a four point halftime deficit to defeat a good Kellenberg team by a score of 69 to 53 and win their 6th consecutive game. LuHi has 3 players capable of scoring 20 points in a game and a talented point guard to distribute the ball. Jay Henriquez led the way, finishing with 20 points and Kevin Johnson finished with 18.                    1/11

                    1/9 Highlights
Jamel Rahiem hit the winning basket with 18 seconds left for Great Neck South in a big 63-61 road win over Roslyn.... Azfar Khan and Cory Harville led East Meadow to a 69-62 OT win over Port Washington........ Sewanhaka picked up a big road win at Garden City, winning 63-56 and giving the Trojans their first conference loss. Naquan Bell led the way with 23 points....... Trevor Coston was back in the line-up for John Glenn, but Andrew Ayodeji grabbed the spotlight, hitting a 3 pointer at the buzzer to lift Amityville past Glenn 54-52.... East Islip improved to 7-0 when DJ Dinota hit a 3 pointer with 2 seconds left against Smithtown East...... In a game that featured a battle between two of Long Island's top big men, Carey defeated Roosevelt 58-48. Mike Sands had 24 for Carey while Quincy Hankins had 33 for Roosevelt.......Two Suffolk teams sporting excellent records locked horns out east, and Rocky Point came from behind for a 44-43 road win over Eastport-South Manor. Rocky Point is now 9-1 ans ESM 8-2.

South Side Mows Down Floral Park
Good teams that are well coached make adjustments. Still playing without starting point guard Pat Croutier, South Side went on the road to face another tough foe in Floral Park - the team that had bounced them from the playoffs the last two years. The Cyclones responded with an impressive 68-58 victory. After struggling in the loss to Jericho, Tom Dowling returned to form,  racking up 27 points, hauling down 9 rebounds and dishing out 5 assists. Chris Bastian poured in 22 points and Pat McDerby added 15. Billy Butler's 31 led Floral Park. 1/12

  East Hampton Drills Rocky Point
Rocky Point actually led at halftime in this one, but the Bonackers put the pedal to the metal in the second half and rolled to a 52-35 road victory. Mike Russell took over, scoring 14 of his19 points after intermission. 1/11

Nine In A Row For Marauders
6'7 big man Jordan Murphy returned to the line-up after sitting out for three weeks with a broken nose and helped lead #2 Bay Shore to a convincing 73-55 win over Commack. Chris Obi starred, finishing with 24 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and Booker Hucks had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Murphy recorded 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks.                             1/11

      Hempstead Alone At The Top
The # 6 Hempstead Tigers are doing what they have to do in newly realigned Nassau County - win all your home games. They had another big teat and passed,  holding off #16 Baldwin 60-56 to grab sole possession of first place in tough Conference AA1. Terrell Halloway led the way again, hitting two big free throws down the stretch and finishing with 22 points.                         1/9

  Buzzer Beater Lifts Bay Shore
#2 Bay Shore had all they could handle with Walt Whitman. They trailed by one with seconds remaining and scored off an inbounds play at the buzzer for a 53-52 victory. Orayne McEachron was the hero.           1/9

   Kellenberg Downs St. Anthony's
Its going to be a great year in the catholic league.  Kellenberg proved they';re going to be a factor too, beating #5 St. Anthony's 47-38 .                                 1/9

                   1/8 Highlights
Malverne made short work of Locust Valley, taking a 14 point halftime lead and then putting on the afterburners in the 3rd quarter for a 71-44 win. Greg Lott finished with  22 points and 14 rebounds for Malverne and Craig Wilson had 15 points and 6 assists....Despite some bad losses, Farmingdale seems to have regained their confidence, picking up a good 54-43 road win at MacArthur. Keenan Ochwat and Brian Tull played they way they are capable of playing, combining for 34 points and 27 rebounds.

    Newsday Salutes The Unsung
Newsday has an article in today's paper about unsung players on Long island. Good idea, but hopefully its part 1 of a series, because there are a lot more than those mentioned.  All of those featured are good picks, but the best of the bunch is Danny Franchese, who is having another great year and deserved to be on the Nassau County Preseason All-Star Team but was not chosen.

Crowley has been one of the premier officials in the game for many years and has officiated four NCAA Final Fours,  six NIT Finals, and been Supervisor of Officials in Nassau County and in the Atlantic 10, Ivy and Patriot Leagues.             Our 200,000th Visitor!
Last April we welcomed our 100,000th visitor. It took us nearly two years to do it. Then from late April to early November, we added 100,000 more! During the off season! It's been incredible and we can’t thank all of you enough.  We honestly never expected anything like this and owe it all to you because it’s all been through your word of mouth. So please keep sending us your news, your announcements, and your emails. Even the angry ones! And please, keep sending us your ideas for making the site better. We’ve used a lot of them. And keep telling your friends! Thanks again from all of us.

        Jericho Wins At South Side
Pat Croutier, the starting point guard for #8 South Side,  was  on the bench in street clothes with an ankle sprain. So when it became clear that Russell Taff was in the process of shutting down South Side star Tom Dowling,  you knew it was just a matter of time before the Cyclones would fall to #14 Jericho. Not that South Side accepted the inevitability of it. They kept within striking distance most of the way thanks to Chris Bastian and Pat McDerby and even managed to make a few runs at the Jayhawks. McDerby's 3 pointer from the corner made it 51-44 with just under 5 minutes left. But  Justin Resnick stole the ball and hit a driving lay-up to make it 57-44 with 3:38 remaining and you knew at that point that South Side was done. Final score 66-54. Taff had a terrific all around game, not only playing great defense but hitting key shots, rebounding and blocking shots too. Matt Cajuste also played well, leading Jericho with 18. Bastian and McDerby finished with 22 and 10 points respectively .                                      1/9

               Random Thoughts
Its happening already in Nassau.  The new Conference set-up is raising some interesting questions that will be hard to answer. How good are 8-0 Bellmore and 7-1 Wantagh? Neither will have a chance to prove themselves until playoff time. Does 2-5 Freeport have any chance of making the playoffs, even though they might be the 10th best AA team in Nassau? What would you say if they made it and Bellmore did not? .......What's up with Uniondale ? We've only seen them play twice so far, but they seem to be searching for leadership. They sure have the talent! .........Who would have thought that four teams would be contending in Suffolk League 5, and none of them is Huntington!..........Don't count them or St. Mary's from the catholic league out though. Both will be very good by the end of the season and the kind of teams you don't want to meet in the playoffs if you're a high seed expecting an easy game. Unless of course the Brattons are done for the season at Huntington.......
League Four looks like Suffolk's most competitive.  Bellport, Deer Park with Josh Malone healthy, and Hills West could all win it and both North Babylon and Hauppauge have shown they can contend.

  #12 Lindenhurst Fights Off Floyd
Lindenhurst knows how to win on the road. They came out with great intensity, jumped out to an early lead and then fought off William Floyd the rest of the game to claim a 60-53 victory. It was a terrific game to watch.  Both teams featured balanced attacks. Kamil Parsych had 18 points, Chris Johnson 17 and Stephan Jurovic 16 for Lindenhurst while Torek Williams had 10, Marvin Lewis  9 and Justin Knightner 9 for William Floyd. 1/19

   Northport Shocks #2 Bay Shore
Sometimes a team just has another teams number. Bay Shore went to the Suffolk Class AA Finals last year, but they were not League 2 Champions. Northport was. They beat Bay Shore twice last season.  Well, Bay Shore is even better than they were last year, but they still can't seem to beat the Tigers. In another hard fought game,  Booker Hucks tied it in regulation, but Scott Moodnick's three gave host Northport the lead early in OT and they went on to a 71-65 win. Ben Atkinson had 19 for Northport and Hucks 25 for Bay Shore.                  1/19
,

Elmont seemingly took control of the game in the 3rd quarter, building their 2 point halftime lead to 12 at the end of three, but #8 Uniondale came roaring back, outscoring the Spartans 19-6 in the 4th quarter for an important 48-47 road win. Steven Priestly, who helped lead the comeback, fouled out with 1:18 left and backup Raenard Reid banked in the winning basket from underneath with two seconds left on the clock.      1/17

                  1/16 Highlights
Marvin Lewis  and John Symonds led William Floyd to a 57-45 win over Brentwood and into a tie with #12 Lindenhurst for first place in Suffolk League 1.....Troy Pender's 3 pointer gave Southampton a 65-62 win over Center Moriches....Dominick Duncan's shot gave Centereach a 59-57 win over West Babylon.....#2 Bay Shore outscored Connetquot 24-2 in the 1st quarter on their way to a 71-40 win.....#9 Copiague outscored Hills East 20-3 in the 2nd quarter on their way to a 80-59 win .....Sachem North outscored Northport 20-8 in the 1st quarter, and then Northport outscored them 55-27 the rest of the way for a 63-47 win. .....#15 East Islip rallied in the 2nd quarter for a 63-52 win over rival West Islip......#11 East Hampton hammered Huntington 74-43. Wow. Newsday says the Brattons probably won't be back for Huntington.

Its Official: LI Will Bid For Federation
Back in the summer, Long Island Basketball.com reported that Long Island would join the bidding for the Federation State Championship Tournament. Its official now. The Long Island Sports Commission will bid today  to host the tournament in 2010. The Federation Tournament matches up the winners of the state public school, catholic school, private school and NYC  public school tournaments. It has never been held outside of Glens Falls.

   Kellenberg Humbles Roosevelt
Kellenberg and Roosevelt kicked off the annual Martin Luther King Day games at Freeport High School in what was expected to a good match-up, but a six point lead at the half and a 17-6 3rd quarter sent Kellenberg on their way to a decisive 60-37 victory. James Scahill led Kellenberg with 15 points.                                       1/15

              Hometown Hero's
1/13 - We have a new hometown hero to introduce. Virginia Tech Coach Seth Greenberg is a Plainview native and graduated from JFK in 1974. Tonight, his Virginia Tech team upset top ranked North Carolina and earlier in the week they knocked off Duke! He is one of three Long Islanders coaching in the ACC now, joining Al Skinner of Boston College and Paul Hewitt of Georgia Tech....... Bill Coen's Northeastern team snapped Hofstra's winning streak. Antoine Agudio had 25 pts in the loss.....Tim Doyle had 11 points and  8 assists in Northwestern's loss to Wisconsin.....1/10 - Kahiem Seawright had 8 points and 11 rebounds in a Rhode Island loss to St. Louis.  1/9 - Donald Brown had 14 points and 8 rebounds in Bucknell's win over American U. .....Rickey Lucas had 21 pts to lead Stony Brook over Binghampton.....Tom Brown (Bayport-Blue Point) had 7 points and 8 rebounds in 19 minutes in Ithaca's win over Elmira. 1/5 - Freshman Max Paul from Sag Harbor, earned Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week honors  at the US Merchant Marine Academy

  Wyandanch Roughs Up Mattituck
Chris Barber led Wyandanch with 30pts and 10 assist and his brother Cameron had his first career triple double with 15pts, 18reb, and 10 assists. The tenacious defense of Wyandanch held Mattituck to only 2 pts in the first quarter and the Warriors went on to win 82-55. Wyandanch is  in 4-0 in League 7                             1/13

           Kings Park In The Mix
With a new coach and coming off a dismal 2005-6 season, not much was expected of Kings Park. Now with 6 league games under their belts, the Kingsmen  stand at 4-2 after defeating a solid Eastport-South Manor team 64-58 on the road. Mike McSloy scored 20 points  and Jon Koop had 6 points and 13 rebounds.  East Hampton is the clear favorite in the league, but after that its anybody's game and Kings Park is right in the thick of it.                                                                           1/13

                       The Polls
We haven't been paying much attention to the polls so far this year, but with the non-league schedule behind us for the most part and league play well under way, it's time to take a look. Regionally, MSG's poll has no Long Island team listed. Hmmm. NY Hoops shows St. Dominic in the #8 spot, but no other Long Island teams - not even on the bubble. Hmmm. The New York State Sportswriters? A/O 1/7, they have St. Doms 12th in AA and Bay Shore 24th. Not bad, but I don't think there are 23 teams in New York state that can beat Bay Shore.  In Class A, they have East Hampton 10th, Jericho 13th and St. John The Baptist 15th. Better. In Class B though, nobody is ranked at all! Neither Malverne nor Wyandanch are one of the top 15  Class B teams in the state. Hmmm. Possible I guess, but not likely. Do we get to vote? We are members, but we do not get to vote.
EDITORS NOTE: The Class B Rankings were a/o 12/31. In the 1/7 rankings, Malverne was 14th.

          St. Dominic Rocks SJB
#1 St. Doms went on a 9-0 run late in the 4th quarter to pull away for a 64-50 win over #3 St. John The Baptist. The Bayhawks used a balanced attack and stellar defense on SJB star Prentice Small to come up with the win. TJ Carey looked good playing the point.             1/9

  Baldwin Survives Malverne Rally
Every quarter, #16 Baldwin would surge ahead and Malverne would rally but never quite catch up. In the 4th, the Bruins built their five point 3rd quarter lead up to 14 with 3 minutes remaining. Malverne's Greg Lott got the Mules going again when he cut the lead to seven with a 3 pointer at the 1:15 mark. Stephen Adekunle's putback made it 59-55 with 35 seconds remaining and after a Baldwin turnover, Lott nailed another 3 pointer and it was 59-58 with 24 seconds left. Would they finally catch them? No. Michael Woods knocked down 2 big free throws for Baldwin and Malverne's potential game tying 3 pointer bounded away at the buzzer. Woods and Scott Henderson led Baldwin with 15 points each and Lott finished with 23 for Malverne.                                                          1/20

Bellport On Top After Big Road Win
When the season started, it looked like League 4 would be one of the tightest races with Bellport, Deer Park and Hills West all fielding good teams. Well, we've made the turn and we're heading for home and only one team remains. Bellport. The Clippers's registered a convincing 53-44 road win over #16 Hills West to pull two games ahead of the 2nd place Colts in League 4. Darrell Simmons led the way for Bellport, dominating the interior on both ends of the court and finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.  Freshman Tobias Harris led West with 19                                1/25

      Copiague Drops East Islip
Copiague came out with great intensity and looked like they were going to blow unbeaten East Islip right out of the gym.  The Redmen had other ideas, weathering storm after storm to find themselves down only six with 4:04 remaining in the game and Copiague star Richard Byrd headed to the bench with his 5th foul. Byrd had dominated the game and knocked down big shot after big shot and things looked grim for the Eagles without his scoring and leadership on the floor. Then after play resumed, John Klein plunged down the left side of the lane and it was 53-49. The big home crowd erupted. But that's as close as they would get. Dwight Gibson knocked down a huge 3 pointer, Jordan Barosy hit both ends of a one and one and then a big jumper from the right side, and it was 60-53 with 43 seconds in the game. The Eagles went on to a 62-58 road win, giving them a 7-0 league record and sole possession of first place in League 3. East Islip fell to 6-1                  1/25

Amityville Tops Bayport-Blue Point
Two good  teams and two good games. This one was even better than the first as Dwayne Wright's basket put Amityville ahead for good with 24 seconds remaining on their way to a 41-38 victory and sole possession of first place in Suffolk League 6. Wright finished with 11 points. Bayport-Blue Point won the first game.      1/24

                1/23 Highlights
In the battle for 2nd place in Suffolk League 1, George Holmes and Erroll Daniyan rallied Longwood from a 3 point halftime deficit to a big 65-52 win over William Floyd. Holmes finished with 18 points and Daniyan 16. The Lions face 1st place Lindenhurst Jan 30th.....
A 24-7 3rd quarter propelled #7 Chaminade past Kellenberg 69-49.....Steve Velazquez had six 3 pointers but it wasn't enough as West Islip downed Hauppauge 59-43. Justin Turri had 21 for WI.

  Single Game Scoring Records
Chris Barber has had 2 big scoring games of 52 and 47 points this season. Wyandanch lost both those games. Is there a lesson in there somewhere ? Anyway, it got us to wondering what the Long Island and NY State records are. As far as we can tell, the Long island record is the 62 points scored by Bill Harvey of Hampton Bays in 1978-79 and the New York State record is a whopping 98 points scored by Bill Kinney of upstate Peru HS in 1954-5.

   South Shore Over Wyandanch
Wyandanch established itself as the dominant Class B team in Suffolk County last year, and has reconfirmed it this season. In order to better prepare themselves for the playoffs and a possible trip upstate, they have played a demanding non-league schedule.  Today  they took on Brooklyn's South Shore in the Wyandanch Classic. It was a tight game through 3 quarters, but the Warriors fell short by a score of 81-73. Chris Barber led  with 47 points and scored his 1000 point in the process. He also had a career high 8 three pointers. His brother Cameron had 20 points and 15 rebounds.               1/20
