  St. Anthony's Falls In Semifinals
In a battle between two surprise teams in the CHSAA State Semifinals, St. Anthony's dramatic season ended quietly in Buffalo with a loss to the Nichols School 72-62. The Friars fell way behind early in the game and did manage to pull within six late in the 3rd quarter, but never seriously threatened for the lead. Patrick Pelkowski had a memorable game, scoring 26 second half points to carry the Friars back into the game, but Nichols went on a run to start the 4th quarter and the Friar's fate was sealed.                                         3/10

Clean Sweep For Island at States
Its nice to be the home team!  Long Island hosted three Regional Final games at SUNY Old Westbury, and Long Island schools came out on top in all three!
Greenport Rallies Past Coleman
Trailing by 7 at the half, Greenport rallied past Section 9 Champion Coleman Catholic 61-53 to advance to the State Class D Semifinals in Glens Falls.
Friends Holds Off Tri Valley
The Section 9 Champion went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 30, but Friends Academy bounced back for a 54-47 win over cold shooting Tri Valley. Alex Petrossian led the Quakers with 23 points as they dominated inside to advance to the State Class C Semifinal.
Malverne Comes From Behind To Beat Burke
Malverne made a 17-5 run to get back in the game and then Justin Williams' layup with 53 seconds remaining gave them their first lead.  Another layup by Williams made it 62-59 with 28 seconds left and the Mules went on to a 63-61 victory over Burke Catholic and a birth in the State Class B Semifinal. Malverne won despite star Greg Lott playing on a bad ankle.                              3/9

  Katz, Davis, Carey Rescue Dom's
After trailing the whole way, St. Dominic rallied past St. Mary's 63-60 to claim their second straight NSCHSAA Class AA Championship. TJ Carey completely shut down Byron Freeman in the 2nd half after Freeman had torched the Bayhawks in the first and carried the Gael's to an eight point halftime lead.  Even so, Jarrell Lawrence's jumper from the right side put St. Mary's up 11 with 6:12 remaining in the game and even the most ardent St. Dom's fan had to be concerned. The Gael's defense had been superb up to that point, and only a rebounding edge was keeping St. Doms from falling hopelessly behind. That all changed with 4:44 remaining. After 3 out of 4 free throws cut the lead to eight, Brian Katz nailed a 3 pointer to bring the Bayhawks within five. Not only was it a big basket, but it brought the crowd to life and put electricity in the air that had been missing most of the night. Katz hit another three with 3:41 left to make it 54-50 and after a basket by Marcos Tamares,  Roland Davis had a traditional 3 point play and then hit a driving layup off a steal by TJ Carey and it was 56-55 with 2:37 remaining. After a St. Doms miss, Davis tied up the rebounder and it was St. Doms ball again with 1:12 on the clock trailing by one. Davis then gave the Bayhawks their first lead with a 3 pointer, and then two foul shots by Katz put them up by four with 37 seconds left. Tamares scored from underneath with 25 seconds remaining and the Gaels sent Davis to the line for 1 and 1 with 23 seconds on the clock. He hit the first, but the second was off and it was St. Mary's ball trailing by three. Carey fouled Freeman going to the hoop, and his two foul shots with 15 seconds left made it 61-60. Another quick foul sent Markeys Deans to the line for 1 and 1, and he missed his first but TJ Thomas came up with another huge rebound and kicked the ball to Davis, who was fouled and sank both free throws for a three point lead. Time for one last shot, but the Gaels three pointer was off target and the Bayhawks on their way to the State Semifinals.                                                                  3/6

LuHi Captures Class A State Title
Long Island Lutheran began the process of reestablishing themselves as one of the top basketball programs in the metropolitan area by defeating Our Savior Lutheran of the Bronx 72-63 for the New York State Private School Class A Championship. Junior Jeriel Henriquez led the way with 21 first quarter points and great defense by Kyle Sheridan and Kevin Johnson down the stretch preserved the victory. Henriquez finished with 33 points, Johnson had 15 points and Rich Harkins added 12 points and eight assists. LuHI is a junior dominated team, so prospects for next year are good too! Their last major championship was
a Federation Title in 1996-97.                                    3/4

Wyandanch Over Kings Park In OT
Suffolk Class B Champion Wyandanch defeated Class A Champion Kings Park 74-72 in overtime in a Suffolk County Tournament of Champions Semifinal. Warriors star Chris Barber scored all of his team's points in overtime, including the game winner with 48 seconds left. Wyandanch will now face the Class AA Champion this Sunday for the title. All of the teams that participate in the tournament are champions in their respective classes and will represent Section 11 in the State Tournament.                                                             3/2

   Upper Room In NYSAIS Final
After years of watching league rival Lawrence Woodmere win the NYSAIS Championship, Upper Room Christian School of Dix Hills will now have the opportunity. The Royals advanced to the Class B Final with a 67-57 win over Fieldston of NYC.  Upper Room broke the game open with an 18-8 3rd quarter after trailing early in the game. Victor Holder led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds and and Corey Jackson had 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists.         3/2

Upper Room Advances / LWA Falls
The top seeded Upper Room Royals routed 8th seed Dwight 62-34 to advance to the semifinals of the NYSAIS Class B State Tournament. The Royals featured a balanced attack led by Victor Holder with 14 points and 11 rebounds,  Corey Jackson with 14 points and 9 rebounds and Roberto Lyons with 10 points and 10 assists. In another quarterfinal, Lawrence Woodmere lost to Fieldston 73-58 despite  20 pts and 11 reb from Max Shillalies.  Fieldston will face Upper Room in the semifinals at Upper Room this Friday. Game time is 5:30.                                                                              3/1
          Kellenberg Advances
Kellenberg advanced to the NSCHSAA Class A Semifinals with a 72-68 OT win over Holy Trinity. James Scahill led the way with 24 points and Chris Lyons was the difference in OT with 5 clutch free throws.         2/28

         Copiague Back In Finals
Top seed Copiague advanced to their second consecutive Suffolk County Championship Game by fighting off 4th seeded Bay Shore and pulling away for a 59-51 victory - their 19th consecutive win in a row. Dwight Gibson had a huge game for the Eagles, dropping six 3 pointers on the Marauders and finishing with a game high 22 points while teammate Richard Byrd finished with 21. After building a 6 point lead in the 2nd quarter, Copiague maintained the margin most of the 1st half and into the 3rd quarter. Gibson's 3 pointer gave the Eagles a seven point cushion early in the fourth,  but then Bay Shore went on what looked like it might be the game winning run,  scoring the next eight points in a row to take a one point lead and seize the momentum with 4 minutes remaining. The Bay Shore crowd erupted. Enter Richard Byrd. Byrd sliced down the lane for a layup and buried a 3 pointer and just like that Copiague was back up by four. Bay Shore's Chris Obi responded with a 3 of his own and it was 52-51 with 2:55 to go but those were the Marauder's last points. Gibson drove the lane to make it 54-51 with 1:40 left and then Marcell Lattimore iced it with a hoop from underneath to make it 56-51 with 32 seconds left. Game over.                                                               2/27

       Floral Park Wins Epic Battle
With time quickly ticking off the clock, Billy Butler launched a 3 pointer with defenders all over him that sailed through the net at the buzzer to give Floral Park a dramatic 63-62 win over South Side in double overtime. With the win, the Knights advanced to the Nassau County/Section 8 Class A Championship Game, where they will face top seed Jericho, a 71-47 winner over Lawrence. It was the 3rd straight year that Floral Park has eliminated South Side in the playoffs, but it didn't look like a dramatic finish would be necessary earlier in the game. As the first half wound down, Butler hit a 3 pointer and then after a steal, Sheldon O'Coner hit two free throws and Floral Park had a surprising 30-19 halftime lead. South Side went on a run to start the second half, quickly erasing the 11 point deficit and taking a 34-32 lead when Tom Dowling hit a driving layup and followed it up with two free throws with 2:09 remaining in the 3rd quarter. It was Billy Butler again in the spotlight as the  quarter drew to a close, knocking down three straight free throws to put Floral Park back on top 35-34. Butler then started off the 4th by draining a three from straight on and it was 38-34. The teams exchanged baskets down the stretch and Floral Park was clinging to a 3 point lead as time ran down in regulation. With 23 seconds left on the clock, Pat Croutier knocked down a clutch 3 pointer to tie it up. Floral Park got two good looks at the basket before the buzzer sounded, but could not end it and the game went to overtime. In the first overtime, South Side raced out to a five point lead but Sheldon O'Conor got the Knights back into the game when he drained a 3 pointer with 1:41 remaining. Pat McDerby made it 53-49 South Side with two free throws at the 45 second mark, but Butler responded with two free throws 5 seconds later. After a South Side turnover, Floral Park got the ball back with 24 seconds left and trailing by two. Butler drove to the hoop this time, drawing the foul and going to the line with only 5 seconds showing on the clock. He came through again, hitting both shots to tie it up. South Side had a chance to win it, getting off a good shot at the buzzer but it was off target. In the second overtime, South Side scored first when Pat McDerby hit a driving layup off the tap. After a free throw by brother Brandin, Butler's turn around jumper gave Floral Park a 56-55 lead with 2:20 remaining. McDerby's free throws made it 57-56 South Side with 2:11 remaining and another free throw by Croutier made it 58-56. Butler pulled up to tie it at 58, but McDerby sliced across the lane for two and it was 60-58 South Side with under a minute to play. With 24 seconds on the clock, McDerby knocked down two more free throws, giving South Side a four point lead. Tristan Thompson got a huge basket,  rebounding a missed shot and scoring  to draw Floral Park within two. It was South Side ball with 10 seconds left, and they inbounded it to Tom Dowling, who was immediately fouled and went to the line for two shots.. He missed them both, and the stage was set for Butler's heroic shot at the buzzer.                                                      2/24

East Hampton and Amityville Fall !
In two huge upsets, John Glenn defeated East Hampton 62-53 and Kings Park defeated Amityville 63-51 in the Suffolk County Class A Semifinals. Wow! The teams were meeting for the first time this season, and now Kings Park and John Glenn will meet for the first time in the finals! There's something to be said for that! Mystery is good!  In the Amityville-Kings Park game, there was a good duel between the two big men. Jon Koop had 19 points for the Kingsmen and Fred Jeter 20 for the Warriors. Mike McSloy, Eddie Owsinski and Matt OLeary were the difference, combining for 36 pts for Kings Park. The team was especially clutch at the foul line, making 14 of their 23 shots down the stretch. In the East Hampton-Glenn game, the Bonackers had no answer for Glenn big man Ifeanyi Momah, who had 20 points while the Knights held Mike Russell to 16.    2/22

                         2/21 Highlights
A 25-8 second quarter for Jericho spelled doom for Roslyn as the Jayhawks went on to a 91-51 win....South Side kept pace, downing Roosevelt 67-52 despite 30 points for Quincy Hankins. Chris Bastian had 16 for South Side.......Nine 3 pointers and a solid defensive job on Mike Sands was the formula for Floral Park in a win over Carey.            St. Mary's Rocks SJB
Just when St. Mary's started to slip off the radar, the Gael's rocked #2 St. John The Baptist 76-61, leading the Cougars wire to wire. Junior Byron Freeman had another big game, finishing with 27 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals and his backcourt mate Scott Machado, who always seems to get a clutch basket when the Gaels need one, finished with 17 points 7 rebs and 5 assists.                                                                   2/20

   Central Islip Rolls Past Bellport
Central Islip stormed to a 10 point halftime lead over host Bellport with Kris Duncan and C.J. Benton leading the way, but the Clippers came roaring back to lead by one at the end of 3 quarters after Steve Edwards scored from underneath and Carlos Malave went cost to coast to close out the quarter. CI quickly regained the lead in the fourth on a rebound putback by Benton and built the lead to 6 on Duncan's free throw. A Carlos Malave 3 pointer cut it to 52-49 with 2:20 left, but Duncan's putback and two free throws gave C.I. a 7 point lead with 1:55 to play.  Bellport started to foul, hoping some missed free throws in the one and one would open the door for them, but CI never wavered. After Edward's hit two free throws for the Clippers, putting them down 5 with 1:34 left, Mills stepped to the line and hit two Randolph did the same and the Musketeers were on their way to a big 62-57 first round playoff victory. 2/20

Greenport Rocks Bridgehampton
Greenport claimed the Suffolk Class D title with a convincing 62-36 win over Bridgehampton, their 3rd straight D Championship in a row.                        2/19

Ayodeji Carries Amityville Past ESM
Eastport-South Manor found the answer in the 2nd half. Their outside shots were not falling against an Amityville team that towered over them, so they started taking the ball aggressively  to the basket after intermission . The strategy worked. A game that looked hopeless after one quarter and only somewhat better at halftime became a two point game with 2:55 remaining when Brendon Hayes surged down the lane and scored for the Sailors. Everything seemed to be going their way. That's when Amityville star Andrew Ayodeji took over the game. After running time off the clock, he calmly drained a 3 pointer, the first of 11 straight points he would score to lead the Warriors to an unexpectedly difficult 64-53 first round playoff win. Ayodeji  finished with 22 points and sophomore Steve Medard had 20.  Hayes finished with 17 for ESM and brother Pat also had 17.                                                                     2/19

      St. Dominic Senior Day Win
It was an emotional day  at St. Dominic. They were playing arch rival St. Mary's and also saying goodbye to a terrific senior class - the class that had played a major role in breaking St. Mary's stranglehold on the NSCHSAA In a special moment, projected starting point guard James Wilson, who missed his senior season with a torn ACL, hobbled onto the court in the starting line-up  to warm applause from the home crowd.  Once the game began, it was another classic in the long rivalry that St. Dominic ended up winning 66-60. Markeys Deans led the way with 24 points.             2/17

                  2/16 Highlights
In Nassau Class AA playoff action, Farmingdale rolled over Port Washington. Steve Probst  and  Keenan Ochwat led the way, combining for 31 points and 20 rebounds......Massapequa got off to a slow start but rallied past Syosset 60-46. Alex Arnold scored 22 for Massapequa.....Valley Stream Central jumped out to a 41-22 halftime lead over MacArthur and then held on for a 77-68 win......In other non-playoff action, Walt Whitman hammered Northport 64-45 to grab a share of the Suffolk League Two title.....Markeys Deans led St. Dominic over Kellenberg 82-54. He finished with 18......

         Hicksville 58  Freeport 49
Was Freeport overrated, or Hicksville underrated ? Or maybe a little of both? When they switched to the new conference set-up in Nassau this season, they ranked every team in the county based on a formula. After plugging in all the numbers, it was decided that Freeport was one of the best AA teams in the county, and Hicksville one of the worst. Well, Friday the two teams met in the first round of the playoffs and guess what? Hicksville won. In fact, they led 29-14 at the half, fought off a Freeport rally and won by 9. Whats up with that? First off, Hicksville has Danny Franchese. The player Newsday called one of the most underrated players on Long Island was his usual self, finishing with 23 points. Nobody on Freeport could match his performance. Second, Freeport came in with a 1-12 record. Yes they played one of the toughest schedules on Long Island, but its real hard to play with confidence when you're 1-12. If you've ever been on a 1-12 team, you know what I mean. Next test for Hicksville is Baldwin on Tuesday.                                                2/16

         Peaking at Right Time
In a game they might have lost in December, Upper Room trounced a good Thurgood Marshall team on Saturday  by a score of 74-43. The Royals took their lumps earlier in the season. They played a very demanding non-league schedule, as they always do, and got beat by some very good teams.  Today though, they begin the IPPSAL playoffs undefeated in league play and as the heavy favorites to capture the league crown. They also have to be considered serious contenders for the private school State Title. What changed?  Their strong core of upperclassmen has played well all season, led by star Corey Jackson, who had 33 against TMA, and point guard Roberto Lyons. In the mean time, their younger players have started to mature and make significant contributions as well - particularly sophomore Victor Holder, who had 11 points and 23 rebounds against TMA. In the previous two games, he had 14 points against defending league champ Lawrence Woodmere  and 17 points and 18 rebounds against Kew Forest. Now the Royals come at you from all different directions. They're going to be tough to beat.                                                            2/10

       Hempstead Back On Track
After getting off to a 11-1 start this season and looking like the team to beat in Nassau AA1, Hempstead  lost  three straight games on a brutal road trip and found themselves slipping out of contention. A home win over new division leader Elmont was crucial. They got it. Lyron Williams led a furious pressing  and  trapping defense that completely overwhelmed  the Spartans in the first half, causing turnover after turnover and giving the Tigers a comfortable 38-23 halftime lead. But Elmont came out of the locker room in the second half like a different team, steadily erasing the deficit behind the shooting of David Akinnyooye and the determined play of Brian Hutchinson.  Hutchinson's free throws and a steal and layup by Akinnyooye made it a two point game with 3 minutes remaining and then Akinnyooye tied it uo with two free throws with 1: 50 on the clock. Thats when the Tigers made their stand - at the foul line and on defense. They retook the lead on Stephen Atkinson's two free throws and then Terrell Holloway  gave them a 3 point lead with another free throw.  Hutchinson made one out of two for Elmont to make it 62-60 with 19 seconds left and then Raymond McClough hit one of two for Hempstead and it was 63-60 with 15 seconds left. Then Lyron Williams,  who had a quiet 2nd half, made a huge steal, got fouled and iced the win with two big free throws. Final 65-60 Hempstead.                           2/09

        St. Mary's Upends TMA
Chalk one up for an LI team as St. Mary's beat Thurgood Marshall Academy 57-51 in a tight game at Hofstra Arena.  Junior Byron Freeman once again led the way with 21 points and 5 rebounds.  TMA's Steven Ruple had 29 points in the loss.  Marys now 9-11, next game versus Holy Trinity on Sunday                               2/9

         Sachem North At Buzzer
Bret Bernbaum hit a 15ft jumper at the buzzer as North defeated Connetquot in a League 2 game. Bernbaum led the Arrows with 18 pts.                                              2/7

  Amityville Subdues John Glenn
John Glenn had reeled off 5 wins in their last six games and came into Amityville looking to show the league leaders that they would be a force to be reckoned with come playoff time .Instead, the Warriors showed them why they had won 10 in a row and lead the league, pulling away in the 2nd half for a resounding 66-52 home win. Andrew Ayodeji had a big game with 22 points while Trevor Coston led Glenn with 13.          2/6

St. Anthony's Upsets #4 St. Mary's
St Anthony's defense  held St Mary's in check in the1st quarter as the Friars raced out to a 17 - 9 lead and then held on for a 54 - 49 victory.  Pat Pelkowski and Shahab Syed combined for 12 pts in the 1st quarter and Pelkowski and Kevin Kerr hit 4 FTs down the stretch to hold off the Gaels. St Anthony's used a balanced attack in the game as Michael Grant  had 15 pts and Chris Jimenez chipped in 13 pts for the Friars.  who improved to 3-5 in the close knit catholic league. Shahab Syed hit for a double doble with 11 pts and 12 rebs. Scott Machado tried to rally the Gaels with 8 of his 10 pts in the fourth. The Gaels fell to 4-4 It was the 2nd big upset of the season for the Friars. They also have a win over #2 St. John The Baptist.                                              2/6

           St. Doms Falls Short
St. Dominic made their fans and all Long Island basketball fans  proud tonight. No they didn't beat Christ The King. But they played like they expected to beat the heavily favored Royals and battled them the whole way before falling 63-50. The final margin was pumped up by free throws at the end. And if a few of those shots that looked good but rolled off the rim had fallen for them, who knows? Message to St. Doms fans:  a packed house roaring with every big basket might have made the difference.                                                         2/3

Islip Gives East Hampton A Game
Unbeaten and 11th ranked East Hampton went on the road to play a solid Islip team and you figured if they were going to slip up anywhere on their way to an unbeaten season, this was as good a place as any. Islip had given them a tussle in East Hampton a few weeks back, and road games are always tougher. Well, it didn't happen. You really couldn't even say it almost happened either. What you can say is that Islip is a good team and Josh Clarke is a heck of a player, but whenever they got close - and they did, cutting it to 7 with 2:40 remaining in the 3rd on a Vince Williams fast break layup and to 6 with 4:05 remaining in the game on Clarke's 3 pointer - Mike Russell and his teammates put it into another gear and pulled away. Final score, East Hampton 74, Islip 61. If you haven't had a chance to see Mike Russell play, don't miss out. He's a big time player, and his teammate Marcus Edwards is pretty special too.                       PHOTOS POSTED !                     2/2

Harris Breaks Record At Hills West
Tobias Harris scored 29 points to lead Hills West to 63-53 win over Riverhead. The 29 points was a school record for a freshman. Harris has been attracting interest from colleges already and is considered to be one of the top freshman in the New York metropolitan area.                                                                         2/1
        Jericho Buries Westbury
Jericho avenged their first loss of the season by pounding Westbury 80-53. The Jayhawks greeted their guests with a 26-7 first quarter and then removed all doubt with a 21-9 3rd quarter. Brian Kahn led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds.                          1/31

St. Dominic Rallies Past Holy Trinity
Jon Snead and Holy Trinity had upset on their minds, but an unlikely hero emerged for St. Dominic. Sophomore George Beamon's 14 points helped lead the Bayhawks to a 62-51 come from behind victory over the Titans after they had trailed the entire 1st half.  Snead had three 3 pointers and 19 points to pace Holy Trinity.  1/30

    1/27 Highlights
Bellport continued their march through League 4 with a 71-62 win over Riverhead. Wyandanch established itself as the dominant Class B team in Suffolk County last year, and has reconfirmed it this season. In order to better prepare themselves for the playoffs and a possible trip upstate, they have played a demanding non-league schedule.  Today  they took on Brooklyn's South Shore in the Wyandanch Classic.          St. Dominic Passes Test
St. Dominic has not been the juggernaut we all expected this season. With good reason. Losing James Wilson to a knee injury was a huge blow, and although the team is deep, nobody has emerged to take over at the point. Yet, somehow they' remin unbeaten on Long Island, and the last time i checked, were still our #1 ranked team. Why? With all their faults, they're still a heck of a team. Not head and shoulders better - just better. They beat a  good Our Savior Lutheran team tonight. By four. No blow-out, but a win nonetheless. Brian Katz was the star, finishing with 20.               1/5

           52 Points Not Enough
Chris Barber tried to single-handedly lead his Wyandanch  team to a win over Samuel Gompers of the Bronx at the Rim Rockers Classic. If you ask Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Kobe Bryant, and Lebron James, they'd all tell you that it rarely works. Good teams win championships, not individuals. Barber scored a tournament record 52 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and dished out 6 assists, but Gompers defeated Wyandanch 97-94 in overtime. St. Mary's Rallies Past Uniondale
This was classic December basketball. Two very good teams on a neutral court that don't normally get a chance to play each other, both with very strong basketball traditions. It was defending Long Island Public School Class AA Champion and perennial Nassau County champion Uniondale, ranked 2nd in our preseason Poll, facing 6th ranked St. Mary's, Long Island's dominant catholic school program over the past 10 years. Uniondale struck first, grabbing a 12-0 lead  when James Merrill knocked down a 3 pointer. St. Mary's responded with a run of its own, shaving the lead to 16-13 on Nigel Wingate's jumper as the first quarter came to an end. St. Mary's then took a brief lead early in the 2nd quarter on a Scott Machado jumper from the foul line, but Uniondale quickly responded with a Raenard Reid put back to reclaim the lead and then back to back baskets by Merrill and they were up by 6 at the half.  Uniondale extended their lead to 11 early in the 3rd quarter, but St. Mary's defense clamped down and held the Knights to 9 points in the quarter and Scott Machados' 3 pointer made it a one point game at the end of three. Then St. Mary's made their move. With the score 47-41 Uniondale with 5 minutes left in the game, Machado drained a 3 pointer, Jeffrey Mark scored on a a layup, and Machado hit another 3 and it was suddenly St. Mary's 49-47 with 3:48 remaining - a lead they would never relinquish. Jerrell Lawrence made it 51-47 and Byron Freeman 53-47 on a fast break lay-up and that's the way it ended. St. Mary's had scored the last 12 points of the game and held Uniondale to just 5 points in the quarter and 14 in the half. Great all around games from Machado and Marcos Tamares. Machado finished with 18 points, while Tamares, who finished with 12,  outplayed Uniondale big man Steven Priestley, who spent much of the game on the bench in foul trouble.                                             PHOTOS                               12/9

       Glenn Rallies Past Babylon
Babylon jumped out to a 12-2 lead behind with a balanced attack and strong board work and threatened to blow John Glenn right out of the gym, but Glenn star Trevor Costen and the Glenn defense took control in the second quarter to rally them past the Panthers for a 57-53 win. Glenn cut the lead to four by halftime and then Coston's fast break lay-up with 4:21 remaining in the 3rd quarter gave them their first lead. It was 48-40 Glenn on two free throws by James Gross with 6:03 remaining in the 4th, but the Panthers closed to within two with 1:20 remaining on a short jumper in the lane by Vigilio Soto. They got the ball back with a chance to tie or go ahead but turned it over under their own basket and had to foul as time ran down. The most striking thing is no St. Mary's in their Top 10. When was the last time that happened ? Is it legit, or just some more St. Mary's bashing from Newsday? Find out when we release our preseason SWEET 16 this Sunday !

         St. Mary's Falls to B&G
Boys and Girls HS shot poorly but completely dominated St. Mary's on the boards and pulled away for a 64-49 victory over the Gaels. The Kangaroos got second, third, even fourth chances off the offensive glass and numerous fast break opportunities off the defensive glass. St. Mary's fought back valiantly every time they fell behind by double digits, but their rallies died when they gave up an easy fast break layup or gave B&G 2 or 3 chances to get the big basket they needed to hold the lead. Their last rally brought them within 6 when Lawrence nailed a baseline jumper with less than 3 minutes remaining, but B&G got a big 3 from the corner to go up by 9 with 1:20 left and then hit almost all their free throws down the stretch for the final margin. Marcos Tamares led St. Mary's with 16 points.

          Molloy Over Kellenberg
Kellenberg opened their season on the road and lost to Archbishop Molloy  73-52.

St. Mary's grad Rashad Green led Bridgton Prep to a come from behind victory over American Christian. Green finished with 20 points. OSNA got off to a bad start, getting overwhelmed by  Lee Academy. Teeng Akol was the lone bright spot with 18 points and 9 rebounds. (The OSNA score was originally reported to us incorrectly)

       Wilson Out For St. Dom's
James Wilson, who we were just saying had a great summer and was going to make a big contribution to  the Bayhawks this year, tore his ACL in practice and will miss his senior season. St. Dom's is talented and deep, but a player like Wilson is not easily replaced. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Deer Park's Early Season Gauntlet
Deer Park, who should have a strong team this season and contend for the Suffolk League 4 title, has a very tough non-league schedule that will test them early in the season. They start with the Cougar Classic on 12/15, then they go on the road against perennial Suffolk power Brentwood,  then on to Lindenhurst to take on the young and talented Bulldogs, then a visit to defending League 1 Champ and class AA semifinalist Northport, and then they wrap up 2006 in Huntington against the defending Suffolk Class A Champion Blue Devils. Wow!

The Nassau County Top 40 doubleheader games were played Tuesday. In the first game, Island Trees' Shawn Fenton hit a  jumper from the corner to give  the White Team the win. Jamal White from Roosevelt, Farley Renee of West Hempstead and Pat Croutier of South Side had strong games for the White team, while Hutchinson and Quamel Lyerly  of Lawrence were the bright spots for the Blue.     Southside JV Champs At IG
The last Summer League Championship game of the 2006 season was played August 31st at the Island Garden and it had the same excitement as the other finals. The Cyclones of Southside High School pulled out an impressive victory over a very talented Lightning team coached by Wayne DeSimone. The final score had the Cyclones on top by 61 to 57 although the game was even closer than the score indicated. It came down to clutch free throw shooting by the Cyclone's Jessie Winter who sank all four of his fouls shots with under 25 seconds remaining in the game. Joe Vistola was the high scorer for the Cyclones with 13 points.

The coaches were impressed with his all-out effort at every station, as well as his extra work hours after the day was over. Malave is looking forward to leading the Bellport Clippers to a great season this year.
                Player Rankings
Its the time of the year that all the various scouting services and websites start issuing their player rankings. Streetbeat New York has theirs ready first. Streetbeat looks at players in NYC, Westchester and Long Island. In the Senior Class, they rank  Andrew Beinert 6th, Markeys Deans 8th, T.J. Carey 13th, Quincy Hankins 19th, Steve Priestly 21st, Chris Barber 22nd,  Brian Hutchinson 24th, Roland Davis 26th, T.J. Thomas 33rd, and Ray Jones 38th. You'd have to agree with most of the names, but there are definitely some names missing and the order is a bit off. The underclassmen lists however are really off.

St. Doms Plays Well At Jam Fest
From HIGH HOOPS and authored by John P Miciotta
As they have the past two years, the Bayhawks came in and played very well. Senior Marquise Deans was their best player, playing tough inside and hitting an occasional trey. Senior lefty Roland Davis also continued what has been a very good summer for him. His quickness and hustle got him on every loose ball and when he got one he usually took it hard to the basket and finished the play. He continues to shoot the jumper from a low release point and that lead to some inconsistent shooting but the other parts of his game, particularly his hard work on defense undoubtedly opened some eyes. 6'7" sophomore Paul Bilbo, a transfer from Long Island Lutheran also showed lots of energy in a reserve role.

  Malverne Advances To Fed Final
Malverne advanced to the Federation State Championship game with a 61-53 win over New York City PSAL Champion Eagle Academy! The Mules full court press fueled an 18-3 run that put them in the lead to stay. Greg Lott finished with 18 points and Craig Wilson 16.                                                            3/23

        St. Dom's Can't Stop CTK
Whenever St. Dominic looked like they might make a game of it, Christ The King got the big basket they needed, or the big steal, or the big rebound. The Bayhawks just couldn't stop them when it counted. Particularly Andrew Gabriel. And now the season that was so eagerly anticipated is over. Long Island's best team lost 78-65 in the CHSAA State Semifinals to Christ The King. Markeys Deans was a force the entire game and finished with 29 points, and he and TJ Thomas proved to be tough match-ups for CTK, but when Thomas got into first half foul trouble, the Bayhawks were unable to find points from anybody else.  Brian Katz was effectively denied the ball most of the game, Roland Davis was getting shots that just weren't falling, and TJ Carey was playing sick and not himself.        3/17

    Friends Academy Falls In Final
In a g ame webcast live here on LIB.com, Sidney went on a 14-2 run late in the 3rd quarter to put away Friends Academy 67-49. Jon Williams had another terrific game with 17 points,  but Sidney dominated the boards and went on two big runs that the Quakers could not respond to.                                                              3/17

Copiague Eliminated By Mt. Vernon
Mount Vernon opened the game with a dunk and Copiague was  down 12-0 before they knew what hit them. The Eagles tried to bounce back, but were down   by 22 at the half and never seriously challenged after that. 15 was as close as they got to the defending State Federation champs.                                                3/17

Greenport Overwhelmed By Finney
Greenport's first trip to the State Class D Final Four came to a disappointing end as the Porters fell behind early and dropped a 57-36 decision to defending State Champion CG Finney of Section 5. Greenport could never really mount an attack against the #1 ranked team, scoring only 13 first half points and finding themselves down 22 at the break. Ryan Creighton was 6 of 21 from the field and Fred Grace 6 of 25 for the Porters while Finney shot 52% as a team.             3/16

Kings Park Does It Again !
Kings Park pulled off another huge upset, defeating Jericho 66-60 to capture the Long Island Class A Championship! After trailing badly in the first half, the Kingsmen staged a late rally led by Mike McSloy that cut Jericho's lead to 8 at intermission. The rally continued into the third quarter led by Eddie Owsinski. The sparkplug knocked down a three pointer and hit two pull up jumpers to pull the Kingsmen within one, and then Jonathan Concepcion gave Kings Park the lead, nailing a jumper from the left side off an inbound play and the Kings Park crowd erupted as the 3rd quarter came to a close. Jon Koop kept things going to start the 4th quarter, scoring from down low to put the Kingsmen up by three.  Owsinski drained a three pointer and it was Kings Park by four with 3:30 to go and after two Matt Cajuste free throws, Owsinski struck again from behind the arc and the lead was five. Concepcion made it a six point game with under three minutes to play on a free throw, but the Jayhawks were not done yet. Brian Kahn's steal and basket with 1:12 remaining.cut the lead  to two.  McSloy was fouled on the inbound pass and went to the line for one and one -  hitting both shots for a four point lead with 1:02 remaining. After a Jericho miss,  Brendan Ujvary was fouled with 45 seconds left and hit one out of two free throw for a 5 point lead. Then the back breaker. Concepcion stole the ball and fed McSloy going to the basket. Cajuste was called for an intentional foul trying to stop him, fouling out of the game and giving Kings Park two free throws and the ball. McSloy hit both shots for a seven point lead with 34 seconds left and King Park was on their way  to Glens Falls.                                                              3/10

Greenport Hammers Clark Academy
Ryan Creighton hobbled off the court a week ago in a Suffolk Tournament of Champions game against eventual County Champ Wyandanch with a badly sprained ankle. He returned today for Greenport's 1st round State Championship game and scored 31 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and dished out 7 assists  to lead the Porters to a 81-65 win over Clark Academy . Looks like the ankle's ok! Fred Grace, who helped put a scare into Wyandanch when Creighton went down, stepped up again with 28 points. Greenport carried a  seven point lead into halftime and then blew the doors off in the 3rd quarter, outscoring their Section 1 foes
35-14.  They hit 14 three pointers on the day.             3/7

  Wyandanch Upsets Copiague
In a huge upset, Class B Champion Wyandanch defeated 3rd ranked Class AA Champion Copiague 76-73 to capture the title at the Suffolk County Tournament of Champions. Trailing by 10 at the half, Cameron Barber rallied the Warriors in the 3rd quarter with 11 of his 33 points, and then Chris Barber, who had been benched after going 3-19 in the first half, returned in the 4th quarter and tied the game with a 3 pointer and went on to score 17 of his 33 points to lead them to victory. It is the first Suffolk County Overall Championship for Wyandanch in school history.                             3/4
            CHAMPIONSHIP T-SHIRTS COMING!

       St. Anthony's Shocks SJB
St. Anthony's held St.John The Baptist to 16 first half points, leading the 2nd ranked Cougars by as many as 22 points and then holding on for a stunning 72-66 win and the NSCHSAA Class A Championship. It is the 3rd time in the last four years the Friars have advanced to the State Tournament. Although the win was viewed as a major upset, St. Anthony's had success against SJB during the season, splitting two close games. Chris Jimenez finished with 15 points and Pat Pelkowski 13  for the Friars balanced attack while Prentice Small had a game high 36 for SJB.                                            3/4

Upper Room Wins Class B Title
Corey Jackson's free throw with three seconds left gave Upper Room a dramatic 60-59 victory over Collegiate in the NYSAIS Class B Championship game.
Jackson finished with 17 points and Roberto Lyons with 12 points and 7 assists.                                           3/4

Hempstead Champions Once Again
Hempstead jumped out to an early lead  and fought off Baldwin to capture the Nassau Class AA title by a score of 61-51. Trailing by 7 after one quarter and by five at the half, Baldwin cut it to a one point game mid way through the 3rd quarter and trailed by only three with 5:34 left in the game on two free throws by Keenan Hawkins, but Raymond McClough took it right down the lane to make it 49-44 and Terrell Holloway scored on a putback and the Tigers were back up by seven with 4:55 to go. A jumper by Chris Mauldin and one out of two free throws by  Michael Woods cut it to four and after a Tiger free throw,  Brandon Ellis's jumper brought the Bruins within three again, but a putback and basket from underneath by Steve Atkinson made it 56-49 Hempstead with 2:15 left and then a baseline drive by Jahi Fields with 1:45 showing and the Tigers had a nine point lead and were on their way to a date in  the Long Island Championship game with Suffolk County Champion Copiague. Steven Atkinson had a great all around game for Hempstead, finishing with a game high 20 points for the Tigers. 3/3
               CHAMPIONSHIP T-SHIRTS COMING!

     Copiague Crushes Whitman
Copiague dominated Walt Whitman from the opening tap, moving out to a 13 point halftime lead and cruising to a 55 - 39 victory and the Suffolk County Class AA Championship - their 2nd championship in a row. Whitman rallied to cut it to 5 with 5:42 left but Copiague shut down the Wildcats the rest of the way and finished on an 11-0 run. Richard Byrd led Copiague with 22 points.  It was Copigue's 20th win in a row. Whitman was held to 13 first half points and just 8 in the 4Q    3/2

     SJB Overwhelms Kellenberg
Top seed St. John The Baptist played possibly their best half of the year, racking up a 46-22 lead by halftime en route to a 72-58 win over Kellenberg. Prentice Small was game high with 31 points.                               3/2

St. Anthony's Hammers Chaminade
After a tight first quarter that ended 18 all, St. Anthony's outscored Chaminade 20-9 and rolled to a 76-58 win in a NSCHSAA Class A Semifinal game. The Friars stifled the Chaminade shooters with gritty defense and controlled  the boards as Shahab Syed and Erik Koepplin combined for 22 rebs.  Chris Jimenez led the Friars with 19 points, effectively running the show despite being in foul trouble,  and Patrick Pelkowski sliced through the Flyer defense with acrobatic drives to finish with 18. Chaminade won both of the regular season games between the two teams, but with the win, St. Anthony's advances to the Class A Final for the 3rd time in the last four years.                                   3/2

  Green Leads Whitman Over Lindy
Kyheem Green had a monster game to lead Walt Whitman to a 55-49 win over Lindenhurst in the Suffolk County Class AA Semifinals. Green finished with 26 points, but it was his shot blocking and rebounding that were most impressive as he dominated the paint on the defensive end of the floor and repeatedly snuffed out Lindenhurst rallies. Lindenhurst jumped off to an 8-0 lead to start the game, with Chris Johnson and Chris Barnes both knocking down 3 pointers and the Bulldogs looking to take early control of the game, but Whitman came right back and at the end of the first quarter it was 17-16 Whitman. Chris Johnson got the Bulldogs going again in the 2nd quarter with his 3 point shooting, but they couldn't pull away and the Wildcats trailed by only two at the half despite Green spending time on the bench with two fouls. Whitman began to make their move with about 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter. Green made it 34-30 with a hoop from underneath and after a Lindenhurst basket, Hanif Molloy sank two free throws and John Mills hit a 3 pointer and it was 39-33 Whitman with 1:04 remaining in the quarter. With the 4th quarter underway, Green's tip in made it 43-35 Whitman but back to back steals and fast break baskets by Chris Johnson and Lindenhurst was back in it 43-39 with 4:54 left to play.  After Molloy went 1-2 at the line to make it 44-39, Green soared through the air to block a shot and then got the ball back on the break to put Whitman up by seven with 4 minutes left in the game. Kamil Parzych drew  a foul and hit both free throws to make it a five point game and Johnson turned up the heat another notch when he drilled a long 3 pointer to make it 48-46, but Green put back a miss and Whitman was back up by 4. Parzych again drew a foul, but this time he made his first shot and missed the second. There was a tie-up on the rebound and Lindenhurst had the possession arrow so with 39 seconds remaining they had the ball trailing by 3, but their attempt to tie it missed badly. They sent Tom Rowser to the line with 23 seconds remaining and he drained  two free throws and then Green drained two more and the Wildcats were on their way to the Suffolk championship game!                                              2/27

          Great Games In Suffolk
There were four Class AA Quarterfinal games played in Suffolk last night, and every one of of them was a great game. In one that was back and forth the whole way, top seed Copiague outlasted Longwood as Robert Carpenter hit a driving layup to put them up by three with two minuts remaining and then Richard Byrd and Dwight Gibson iced it with free throws. George Holmes  had a big game for Longwood, finishing with 19 and Byrd was game high with 34..... Second seeded Lindenhurst held on to beat William Floyd 48-43. Floyd trailed by 9 after one and was down the whole first half, but made it a two point game in the third quarter and battled the rest of the way before falling....... Third seed Walt Whitman faced confernce foe Central Islip after the two had split games during the season and prevailed 50-46 in another tight game. Kyheem Green's two free throws gave the Wildcats the lead with 23 seconds left and then Tom Rowser iced it with two more.......Fourth seed Bay Shore held off East Islip 53-52 as Jordan Murphy and Booker Hucks hit key shots down the stretch. Chris Obi led the Marauders with 17...... 2/23

    Hempstead Advances To Final
The Hempstead Tigers got off to a great start this season, winning 11 out of their first 12 games. Then they paid a visit to Elmont on January 26th and the Spartans hammered them 65-40. The loss was their first league loss and the first of three losses in a row that knocked them out of first place and almost out of contention. Almost! Today, Hempstead defeated Elmont 70-61 to advance to the Nassau County Class AA Championship game. Elmont grabbed the lead early as Brian Hutchinson dominated the paint, scoring and drawing foul calls against the aggressive Hempstead defense. The Tiger adjusted, double and triple teaming the Spartans big man and collapsing on him whenever he got the ball. Hempstead was able to grab the upper hand in the 2nd quarter on an acrobatic basket and foul shot by Terrell Holloway and then a three pointer by Lyron Williams that gave them a 28-25 lead with 5:10 remaining.in the half. Another Williams three pointer to start the second half made it 42-37 Hempstead. Holloway plunged down the lane for two and followed it up with a three pointer of his own and the Tigers had a 9 point lead with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. Elmont cut it to 53-49 with 6:10 remaining in the game when David Akinyooye followed up a missed shot, but a foul and technical foul call against Elmont broke the Spartans momentum and gave Hempstead a 55-49 lead. Holloway's basket made it 57-52 with 3:30  left and after the teams traded baskets and free throws, his two free throws iced it with 45 seconds remaining.           2/23

  Greenport Suffolk C/D Champs
Greenport used an 18-6 third quarter to pull away from Stony Brook in the Suffolk overall championships. With the 62-46 win, Greenport advances to face Suffolk B Champion Wyandanch Wednesday night Feb. 28th at 6:30 pm. The Greenport - Wyandanch game WILL BE BROADCAST LIVE ON RADIO AND ON THE INTERNET BY WLNG. Go to 92.1 on your FM dial or to www.wlng.com. None of theses games between the class champions are elimination games. Stony Brook will still represent Suffolk as Class C Champion in the State Tournament game as will all the class winners in their respective classes. Suffolk holds a separate tournament between all the class winners to crown one County Champion.                                                                                         2/22

                 2/20 Highlights
Chris Barnes scored 30 points and Lindenhurst almost broke the century mark in a dominating 99-62 win over Smithtown West. Lindenhurst shot 19 for 24 from beyond the arc and their 19 treys were a Suffolk County record! .......West Islip slowed the pace to a crawl again - there were 5 points total scored in the 4th quarter and 18 in the second half - but Longwood prevailed 47-40 in double OT. The Lion's Errol Daniyan had 18 of his team's 47 points........Hempstead and Massapequa battled back and forth most of the way before the Tigers pulled away for a 69-59 win. Terrell Holloway led Hempstead with 26 points........ Another big upset? Not this time. St. Dominic jumped all over Holy Trinity, racking up a 27-8 first quarter on their way to a 88-47 win. Roland Davis had 21 points for the Bayhawks.......Uniondale also started off with a devastating 1st quarter barrage, putting Valley Stream Central in a 23-5 hole they could never climb out of. The final was 75-41. James Merrill and Cliff Brown combined for 40 points and Merrill and Steven Priestley combined for 23 rebounds....... East Islip dodged a bullet when John Kleins hit one of two free throws with  six seconds left to force overtime against Northport. The Tigers regrouped to take a four point lead in OT, but D.J. Dinota hit two free throws with 1:36 left to put EI up 62-61 and they went on to a 66-64 win.

Elmont Cruises Past Farmingdale
After an even first half, Elmont pulled ahead in the second on the strength of their press and pretty much held the lead the rest of the way. The Dalers made several attempts to draw even, but the Spartans fought them off with quiet determination, winning 52-41, Brian Hutchinson controlled the paint, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds.                                                    2/20

Babylon Advances To Class B Final
Babylon and Southampton had split two close games already this season, and there was no reason to believe it would be any different when they met in the Suffolk Class B semifinals. It wasn't.  The only difference was that Beau Bachtey led the way this time for the Panthers, hitting two big free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give them the lead and finishing with a game high 17 points as Babylon held off Southampton 63-59.                                                2/19

    Kings Park Stops Bayport BP
Bayport - Blue Point has one of the best Class A teams on Long island. There is no doubt about that. So does Kings Park, and  there should be no doubt about that now either. In a terrific game filled with clutch performances, the Kingsmen fought off a fierce Phantoms rally and held on for a dramatic 54-49 victory. Trailing the whole game, Rob Ptacek's drive down the lane gave BBP a 2 point lead with 2:20 left. It was do or die for Kings Park and Eddie Osinski responded with a huge 3 pointer from the right side to break Bayport's momentum and put Kings Park  back on top by one. Brendan Ujvary followed Osinski's big shot with one of his own, hitting a jumper from the foul line to make  it 48-45 Kings Park with 1.22 remaining. After a BBP basket cut it to one, Osinski nailed another big one, this time draining a short jumper to make it 50-47 and then Mike McSloy knocked down two clutch free throws and it was 52-47 with 45 seconds remaining. Bayport could not get a 3 pointer to drop as time ran down, and appropriately it was Osinski that iced it for the Kingsmen. After two straight misses by his teammates in the 1 and 1 kept giving Bayport hope, he stepped to the line and hit two free throws with 10 seconds on the clock for an insurmountable seven point lead.     2/19

       Good Game At Floral Park
Floral Park's strength is its 3 point shooting, and its weakness is its rebounding. The 3 point shooting was spotty today against Garden City, and the Trojans had the horses to control the boards and that turned a match between the #3 seed and the #14 seed into a heck of a game. In fact, if Garden City hadn't missed a bunch of layups, we might be telling you about the big upset of the day right now. Instead, Brandin Butler came to the rescue for the Lions, wisely taking the ball to the basket when the outside shots weren't falling and scoring or feeding it to open teammates and Floral Park went on to defeat Garden City 49-43. Butler  finished with 25 points. Rob Finneran, who played the kind of game that inspires a team, finished with 19 for Garden City.                  2/17

    St. Anthony's Stops Holy Trinity
Somebody forgot to tell St. Anthony's and Holy Trinity that only the public schools were playing playoff basketball because there was a playoff atmosphere in Hicksville for the NSCHSAA match-up. In a high scoring 1st quarter, the  Titans took a 21-16 lead thanks to the hot shooting of Vincent Roberts[8pts] The Friars answered that with an 11-0 run to start the 2nd.  The game went back and forth untill the last 11 seconds. Trailing by 4 and with fouls to give, the Friars did a masterful job of fouling and utilizing the clock. Chris Jimenez scored on a layup to cut the lead to 2. Then Erik Koepplin got a big rebound The Titans also had fouls to give and they did until Jimenez broke away and hit a three as time expired for a 66-65 victory!      2/16

      Lake Grove Goes Unbeaten
Lake Grove finished their season a perfect 15-0, defeating Lexington  to capture the IPPSAL Division 2 Championship by a score of 58-42.  Lexington gave the favorites all they could handle in the first half, but Lake Grove went on a late 2nd quarter run and went into the locker room with a nine point lead. In the second half, their press continued to generate some easy baskets and they  patiently worked the ball around until they found an open man in the half court and were never really threatened.  They also were particularly effective on inbound plays. Royce Iturriaga led LG with 20 pts while Tobi Adedeji had 14 for Lexington.              2/15

#1 St. Doms Tops #2 SJB In 2 OT's
It looked like it was finally going to happen. #2 St. John The Baptist had dominated the first half and although #1 St. Dominic had battled its way back into the game, the Cougars were poised to hand the Bayhawks their first league loss and first loss to a Long Island team this season. Prentice Small had just gone coast to coast to put SJB back on top by one, and then he followed that up by draining two free throws to put the Cougars up 3 with 17 seconds remaining. St. Doms then brought the ball up court and called time with 13 seconds left. The play they ran out of the time out unfolded perfectly, and as time wound down Brian Katz came off a screen and buried a three pointer to tie the game and send it into OT. But the Cougars were relentless. They struck again quickly in the extra period, with Small pulling up for a short jumper to start things off and Anthony Parris, who had been quiet most of the game, knocking down back to back 3 pointers from the left corner to give them a 66-60 lead. After the teams exchanged free throws, SJB had the ball with a chance to go up eight, but Katz intercepted a pass and went the distance to make it a four point game with 1:01 left in OT.  Roland Davis then drove down the left side of the lane and cut it to 67-65 with 40 seconds remaining. With 15 seconds left and his team up by one, SJB's James Doran went to the line for two shots. He missed his first one, but a seemingly costly St. Doms violation gave him new life and he proceeded to knock both of them down  for a 3 point lead. This time though there was no perfectly run play. The Bayhawks worked the ball to Roland Davis at the top of the key and with Cougars draped all over him,  he double pumped in the air and launched a contorted looking shot that sailed through the hoop and sent the game double OT. In in the second OT, the teams exchanged the lead the whole way. Prentice Small's pull up jumper tied it up at 82 with 29 seconds left but Roland Davis released long against SJB pressure and scored to make it 84-82. With time running down, the Cougars had one last chance but an inbound pass was deflected by the Bayhawks. The Cougars retrieved it in the backcourt with virtually no time left, passed it ahead and launched a rushed shot under extreme pressure that bounded away. Final 84-82. An unforgettable game !                                                                                     2/10
            Jericho  Holds Serve
Jericho completed an undefeated home schedule with a big 72-70 win over South Side. With the score tied at halftime, Mike Romanelli erupted in the 2nd half to put the Jayhawks up by 13 and then they held on for a 72-70 win. Romanelli finished with 19 points to lead all scorers. South Side trailed by 10 with 1:54 remaining and managed to cut it to two at the buzzer.             2/9

Its Over ! Ross 59 Shelter Island 53 !
After 51 consecutive losses, The Ross School defeated Shelter Island 59-53. Evan Bennett had 20 points in the historic win and Dan Richard had 17.                     2/8

Hicksville Moves to 11- 0 With Win
What does it take to go 11-0 in Conference AA4? Danny Franchese!  Hicksville and Bellmore are both good, well coached teams but Hicksville has the talented Franchese and because they do, they are headed for the Class AA playoffs with a very real chance to advance while 14-2 Bellmore will be staying home. Franchese scored 23 of his teams 47 points to lead them to a convincing 47-34 victory in what amounted to a playoff elimination game. The new conference setup and playoff format awards only one playoff spot to AA4. Their first round playoff opponent should be Freeport.              2/6              WATCH FOR THE HICKSVILLE TEAM PAGE

   Chaminade Fights Off Westbury
The Reid Robeson Classic has a history of good games, but this year didn't look like it was going to be one of them. Catholic power Chaminade was the opponent, and host Westbury, who would have been an underdog at full strength, was missing their two big men, Bruce Chong and David Parker. It was a particularly bad blow for the Green Dragons because Chaminade has a talented but undersized line-up. So when Chaminade raced out to an early lead behind a red hot Andrew Beinert and walked off the court at intermission up 26-15, it was no surprise.  The only surprise might have been that Chaminade wasn't up by  more.  The 2nd half however was a completely different story. Ricky Rogers, Rashawn McCarthy and Paul Dial led Westbury in a spirited 3rd quarter charge, knocking down all the shots that weren't falling for them in the first half and clamping down hard defensively. All of a sudden it was 32-31 Chaminade on Dial's 3 pointer as time ran down in the 3rd quarter. Rogers made it 35-34 Westbury early in the 4th  on a turn around jumper from the low post but
Chris Fisher's putback put the Flyers back on top 36-35 with 5:25 left. They would never give up the lead again.  A John Dumas 3 pointer made it 40-35 Chaminade and then Robert Koster went back door and it was  42-35 Chaminade with 3:24 left. Rogers went to the line and hit 1 out of two free throws for Westbury to make it a six point game with 3:10 remaining but there would be no more scoring by either team until there was less than a minute left in the game. With 1:32 on the clock, Chaminade had called time and came back on the floor with the intention of taking time off the clock. It worked very well. With the help of a timely offensive rebound, they proceeded to run the clock down to 41 seconds remaining. It was time for Westbury to start fouling people, and they sent Dumas to the line two straight times sandwiched around a missed shot of their own. He proceeded to knock down four straight free throws to ice the game for the Flyers. Chaminade had finished the game on a 12-1 run and came away  46-36 winners. Beinert led Chaminade with 15 points and also had 7 assists, while Rogers finished with 17 for Westbury. 2/3

John Glenn Crushes Shoreham WR
3rd place Shoreham - Wading River needed a win over 4th place John Glenn to stay within striking distance in  the League 6 race - a race few thought they would be involved in at the start of the season. Instead, they were soundly beaten by the Knights, who are healthy and playing very well right now.  Trevor Coston, who missed a few games with an injury and limped through a few others, looked like his old self and poured in a career high 33 points.                                             2/1

             All's Right In Nassau
It just didn't seem right to see anybody but Uniondale in first place.  Well, they're back where they belong now after beating Hempstead 64-54. The new conference set-up makes it very difficult to win on the road, and  the Tigers are feeling the pain after dropping their second straight away from home and giving up the top spot to the Knights. Friday's games should further clarify things as #5 Uniondale hosts #15 Elmont and #7 Hempstead wraps up their brutal road trip at #13 Baldwin.      1/31

Lindenhurst 7- 0 In League One
Lindenhurst defeated League 1 rival Longwood for the 2nd time this season behind 30 points from Chris Johnson.  The loss dropped the Lions into 3rd place with a 5-3 record.                                                  1/30

Dark Day For Long Island Hoops
Eight of Long Island's best teams faced off against top teams from NYC yesterday and only one, the #6 Uniondale Knights, came away with a win, beating All Hallows . #1 St. Dominic, #2 St. John The Baptist, #4 LI Lutheran,#7 Chaminade, #11 Lindenhurst and Holy Trinity all fell, and only LuHi kept it to single digits.  1/28

       Bay Shore Back in Lead
When the week started, #5 Bay Shore surprisingly found themselves in a four way tie for first place with Walt Whitman, Central Islip and Northport in Suffolk League 2 after their upset loss to Northport.  A week later, they have sole possession of first again after knocking off CI while CI knocked off Whitman and Whitman knocked off Northport. Today, Sachem North gave them a battle but the Marauders prevailed 73-66. Junior Booker Hucks continued his strong play with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Central Islip stayed in the hunt with a big 63-56 road win over Whitman. With the win, they're in pretty good shape, hosting both Bay Shore and Northport in February while Bay Shore hosts Northport and is on the road at Whitman and CI                                            1/27

Bellport On Top After Big Road Win
When the season started, it looked like League 4 would be one of the tightest races with Bellport, Deer Park and Hills West all fielding good teams. Well, we've made the turn and we're heading for home and only one team remains. Bellport. The Clippers's registered a convincing 53-44 road win over #16 Hills West to pull two games ahead of the 2nd place Colts in League 4. Darrell Simmons led the way for Bellport, dominating the interior on both ends of the court and finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.  Freshman Tobias Harris led West with 19                                1/25

                1/23 Highlights
In the battle for 2nd place in Suffolk League 1, George Holmes and Erroll Daniyan rallied Longwood from a 3 point halftime deficit to a big 65-52 win over William Floyd. Holmes finished with 18 points and Daniyan 16. The Lions face 1st place Lindenhurst Jan 30th.....
A 24-7 3rd quarter propelled #7 Chaminade past Kellenberg 69-49.....Steve Velazquez had six 3 pointers but it wasn't enough as West Islip downed Hauppauge 59-43. Justin Turri had 21 for WI.

  #12 Lindenhurst Fights Off Floyd
Lindenhurst knows how to win on the road. They came out with great intensity, jumped out to an early lead and then fought off William Floyd the rest of the game to claim a 60-53 victory. It was a terrific game to watch.  Both teams featured balanced attacks. Kamil Parsych had 18 points, Chris Johnson 17 and Stephan Jurovic 16 for Lindenhurst while Torek Williams had 10, Marvin Lewis  9 and Justin Knightner 9 for William Floyd. 1/19

   Northport Shocks #2 Bay Shore
Sometimes a team just has another teams number. Bay Shore went to the Suffolk Class AA Finals last year, but they were not League 2 Champions. Northport was. They beat Bay Shore twice last season.  Well, Bay Shore is even better than they were last year, but they still can't seem to beat the Tigers. In another hard fought game,  Booker Hucks tied it in regulation, but Scott Moodnick's three gave host Northport the lead early in OT and they went on to a 71-65 win. Ben Atkinson had 19 for Northport and Hucks 25 for Bay Shore.                  1/19

                 1/17 Highlights

Great Neck South pulled away in the 4th quarter to pick  up an important 66-53 road win over Bethpage.... Roosevelt blew open a tight game in the 4th quarter of a 70-54 win over Roslyn. Quincy Hankins led the way with 24 points.....Corey Jackson tied it for Upper Room and Jorge Moreno put back the winner with five seconds left against Our Savior Lutheran.....Division upped their conference record to 5-0 with a 53-45 win over Mineola. A  15-6 3rd quarter was the difference..... Tied at the half, #10 South Side got some breathing room with a 21-13 third quarter and went on to beat Westbury 52-44 on the road. Pat Croutier was back in the line-up.......

           Kings Park In The Mix
With a new coach and coming off a dismal 2005-6 season, not much was expected of Kings Park. Now with 6 league games under their belts, the Kingsmen  stand at 4-2 after defeating a solid Eastport-South Manor team 64-58 on the road. Mike McSloy scored 20 points  and Jon Koop had 6 points and 13 rebounds.  East Hampton is the clear favorite in the league, but after that its anybody's game and Kings Park is right in the thick of it.                                                                           1/13

                 1/13 Highlights
Looks like Prentice Small did not play in SJB's 63-53 win over Holy Trinity. Rob Griffin stepped up with 6 three pointers.....Rodney Nicholson's last second shot gave Patchogue-Medford a 45-43 win over Brentwood......Jamal White's two free throws with 39 seconds left gave Roosevelt the lead for good in a 72-69 win over Westbury.....Chris Ryder's basket at the buzzer gave Port Washington a 40-39 win over Plainview.

Brian Kahn led the Jayhawks with 20 points and 11 rebounds .....Sachem East surprised Longwood 66-63 in overtime. Jim Turner, who tied the game in regulation with a 3 pointer, led East with 11 points.

        Jericho Wins At South Side
Pat Croutier, the starting point guard for #8 South Side,  was  on the bench in street clothes with an ankle sprain. So when it became clear that Russell Taff was in the process of shutting down South Side star Tom Dowling,  you knew it was just a matter of time before the Cyclones would fall to #14 Jericho. Not that South Side accepted the inevitability of it. They kept within striking distance most of the way thanks to Chris Bastian and Pat McDerby and even managed to make a few runs at the Jayhawks. McDerby's 3 pointer from the corner made it 51-44 with just under 5 minutes left. But  Justin Resnick stole the ball and hit a driving lay-up to make it 57-44 with 3:38 remaining and you knew at that point that South Side was done. Final score 66-54. Taff had a terrific all around game, not only playing great defense but hitting key shots, rebounding and blocking shots too. Matt Cajuste also played well, leading Jericho with 18. Bastian and McDerby finished with 22 and 10 points respectively .                                      1/9

  Kings Park Makes Huntington 0 - 4
In a tale of two teams that have seemingly switched identities, Kings Park had another impressive outing, moving to 3-1 in League V with a 59 - 40 win over defending Suffolk Class A Champion Huntington. Huntington dropped to 0-4. Mike McSloy had another good game, scoring 26 points and big man Jon Koop did too, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds.          1/6

    St. Anthony's Stuns #2 SJB
It looks like St. Anthony's is rounding into form. After searching for leadership early in the season following the end of the Patrick Foley era, they had four players that came up with big games to help knock off #2 St. John The Baptist. Shahab Syed scored 19 points and pulled down 5 rebounds, Michael Grant had 19 points,  Connor Teehan 14 points and 10 rebounds and Chris Jimenez 13 points. Prentice Small had 26 points for SJB.  St. Anthony's is playing as well as anybody right now with some big wins under their belts.               1/5

        Wyandach Stands Apart
We kind of suspected that Wyandanch wouldn't have much competition in Suffolk Class B this season, but we didn't want to say until after they played Babylon at Babylon. Well they did, and they won easily in front of a packed gym. After the teams traded baskets in the 1st quarter, Chris Barber hit two 3 pointers during a key stretch in the 2nd quarter and Babylon couldn't respond. Final 80-65. Barber and Brother Cameron combined for  55 points. JT Pate led Babylon with 28.                       1/5

  Chaminade Rolls Over St. Mary's
Host #11 Chaminade was ahead by 6 after one and added to their lead in every quarter, beating #4 St. Mary's by 11. Andrew Beinert was terrific as usual, finishing with 16 points and 7 assists, but Rob Coster  was the difference, scoring 18 points and ripping down 11 rebounds.                                                               1/5

             Hills West By One
After missing badly on his first free throw attempt, Hills West's John Rogener hit his second shot to give West an insurmountable 4 point lead over Northport with 6 seconds left in the game.  Alex Aurrichio's jump hook in the lane and Rogener's fast beak layup had given West a 14 point lead with 32 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter, but a 3 pointer by Ben Atkinson and a coast to coast layup by Dan Trant cut it to 10 at the buzzer. Northport's Scott Moodnick opened up the 4th with a three and Atkinson hit one out of two free throws and Northport was back in the game trailing by six. Arrichio's spinning move in the lane stopped the run, but Trant responded with a jumper and it was 49-43.  Kevin Gustavson scored from the low post off a dish from Moodnick and it was 51-47 with 4:05 left to play. West was in the penalty now, sending Atkinson to the line for a 1 and 1. He made both to make it 52-49 with 3:29 remaining, but Tobias Harris drove the lane, picking up a foul and hitting both free throws to make it a 5 point game.  Rogener drove the baseline and was fouled, hitting both shots to put West up by 7 with 2:04 left.  Moodnick's 3 pointer brought it back to 4, but Aurrichio scored in the lane and it was 60-54. Gustavson made it 60-56 off a dish from Trant and Atkinson hit two free throws to make it 60-58. Rogener was back at the line with 39 seconds left, and he made 1 of 2 to put Hills up by 3. After a Northport miss, an intentional foul send Rogener to the line for the final time. Greg Greiner's 3 at the buzzer made the final 62-61.  Harris had a big 1st half and led West with 22 points. Aurrichio had17 and Hennep 13. For Northport, Gustavson finished with 19.and Moodnik 17       12/30

       Malverne Rocks Westbury
Malverne did not look good in their first game of the season, getting pounded by St. Anthony's and looking listless and confused.  Things have changed!  The Mules registered their 2nd straight upset, defeating Westbury 74-59 in the championship game of their own tournament the night after beating West Hempstead 83-65 in the semifinals.  And it wasn't just that they beat two good teams, but they beat them easily! Craig Wilson was the star tonight, scoring 32 points while Greg Lott added 17 points and 13 rebounds.                        12/29

     Amityville 7th At Tournament
Amityville lost two tough games at the Aviator Holiday Hoops Festival in Brooklyn, falling to St. Edmund Prep 47 40 and then to St. John's Prep 65-58. They bounced back to capture 7th place with a 64 49 win over New Utrecht.                                                                  12/29

    Longwood Comes Through
Long Island was in real danger of being swept in the first round of the Rim Rocker Classic being played at Longwood High School. An under sized but tough Geneva High School team from upstate New York led host Longwood  by one with just under five minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, but that's when the hosts finally made their move. Errol Daniyan rebounded his own miss to put the Lions back in the lead, then he and George Wilson scored back to back fast break baskets,  Marcus Hunter scored on a put back at the 3rd quarter buzzer and Daniyan scored again on a put back to begin the 4th quarter and Longwood was up by 6 and ahead for good.  Final score 53-43. Daniyan led Longwood with 16 points and 13 rebounds despite missing a good part of the first half with foul trouble and Brian Fowler had 16 for Geneva.                                                          12/28

                12/27 Highlights
In a battle between two teams hoping to earn contender status this season, Bellport cruised to a 54-44 win over Brentwood. Bellport was led by Darrell SImmons, with 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Steve Edwards, with 11 points and 7 rebounds. Huntington is at full strength now and seems to be back on track, easily beating Commack 65-48. Kevin O'Neill had 17 points for Huntington. Babylon is back on track too, winning their 3rd straight after losing their first three. One of their losses was a close one to an excellent Lindenhurst team. JT Pate should rack up his 1000th career point in their next game. Westbury hammered Long Beach at the Malverne tournament. Surprising, but then in the 2nd game, Malverne hammered West Hempstead! Go figure! Westbury/Malverne final Friday at 7pm.

Battle To Barber, War To Russell
In an exciting duel between two of Long Island's best players, Chris Barber finished with 41 points to Mike Russell's 34, but Russell's team won the game 78-63. Russell also had 7 assists and 5 steals while talented teammate Marcus Edwards added 23 points and 15 rebounds. Wyandanch is the defending Long Island Class B Champion and a favorite to repeat while East Hampton will challenge for Class A honors. The game was originally scheduled for 4:30, but changed to 12:00. That information was not well circulated, as many fans (including our reporter and photographer) showed up at 4:30 only to find out the game had already been played.   Note: Russell scored his 1000th career point.      12/23

  Babylon Surprises North Babylon
In a game between neighboring schools that haven't played each other in over 20 years, Babylon shocked North Babylon by a score of 59-45. JT Pate erupted for 31 points to lead the Panthers.                                    12/22

East Hampton Rocks Eastport SM
Eastport-South Manor went into East Hampton sporting a 4-0 record and contender status in Suffolk's League V. They left reeling from the 81-55 pounding they took at the hands of the 16th ranked Bonackers. Mike Russell was his amazing self, hitting 6 three pointers, dishing out 11 assists and finishing with 30 points.                    12/21

St. Dominic Falls To #11 LeFlore
St. Dominic played LeFlore HS of Mobile Alabama even into the 3rd quarter, but then USA Today's #11 ranked team went on a 14-5 run and and pulled away for a 78-59 victory. Roland Davis led St. Dominic with 24 points.
                                                                              12/20
     Northport Survives At Home
Northport weathered a 4th quarter comeback by 1 - 4 Ward Melville that cut their lead to a single point with 1:27 remaining, holding on for a 63-60 win on their home court. Capping off a 10-0 run, Ward Melville's Colin Field stole the ball from Northport guard Chris Roth right under Northport's basket and scored to make it 61-60. He was fouled by Roth but missed the game tieing free throw. Scott Moodnick saved the day for the Tigers, breaking Ward Melville's run by hitting both ends of a one and one to put the Tigers up by three. Ward Melville got the ball back with 12 seconds left and had two chances to tie it, but could not. Ben Atkinson led the Tigers with 21 points and Moodnick finished with 15. Field led Ward Melville with 16 points and Jeff Brous added 13. Northport Coach George Franck notched his 300th career victory with the win.   PHOTOS      12/20

        St. John's Over Lutheran
It was a good, hard fought game, yet strangely it was never really that close. St. John The Baptist pulled ahead and had an 8 to 12 point cushion most of the way, winning by 17, and just would not let LUHI back into the game, no matter how hard the Crusaders tried.  The two star players, Prentice Small (24pts) of SJB and Jay Henriquez (27pts) of LUHI, were superb, looking unstoppable most of the night. But when one would make a great play on one end, the other would counter. It was the supporting casts that decided the game, and tonight SJB's was better. Rob Griffin and Josh Elbaum finished with 17 a piece for SJB while Matt Rooney had 12 for LUHI.           PHOTOS POSTED !                     12/19

  Nash, Rutledge Help Fuel Upset
Tyrone Nash and RJ Rutledge of LWA both played key roles as their prep school, Northfield Mount Herman , upset the top ranked prep school team in the country, Notre Dame Prep, by a score of 55-54. The teams were playing  in the Boys Club of New York's Prep School Tournament Championship Game. Nash had 20 points in the come from behind win, including the go ahead free throws, while Rutledge finished with 12 points and had a big three pointer that cut Notre Dame's lead to one.

               12/15 Highlights
North Babylon easily defeated Brentwood 73-50 after losing to them a week earlier.  Chris Welsch led the way with a game-high 25 points. East Meadow beat  NYC's Benjamin Banneker 60-48. Tournament MVP Azfar Khan had 19-points, 5-rebound and 4-assist. Anthony Valerio's basket in OT put Deer Park ahead to stay in a thrilling 78-74 win over host Centereach. Stanley Calixte had 7 three pointers and finished with 25 points for DP. Greg D'Alessandro led Centereach with 19. Copiague may be finding their rhythm. They hammered Harborfields 87-44 and Richard Byrd had 27 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals Hauppauge's defense humbled Newfield, holding them to single digits in 3 out of 4 quarters in a 60-30 shellacking. Steve Velazquez led Hauppague with 16 points. South Side used a balanced attack to defeat Holy Trinity 68-55. Chris Bastian had 20 points, Tom Dowling 16 and Pat Croutier 13. Trailing at the half, Hills West caught Islip and pulled away in the 3rd  quarter for a 51-44 win. Freshman Tobias Harris finished with 21 points and is averaging 22 points a game for West. Jericho blitzed Syosset in a 23-8 first quarter and went on to win 79 - 54. Matt Cajuste had 16 points and 8 rebounds. The Butler brothers combined for 41 of Floral Park's 61 points in a 7 point win over Kellenberg.

  Chaminade Prayers Answered
Andrew Beinert launched a shot from well beyond the halfcourt line that fell through as time expired to give Chaminade an incredible 56-55 win over Long Island Lutheran.  Beinert and Chris Fisher both  finished with 17 points for Chaminade.                                      12/11

               12/10 Highlights
A terrific final day of action at the 48th Annual Fritz Mueller/Arnie Sims Booster Club Tournament at Manhasset. In the championship game, two excellent teams battled down to the wire before Hempstead pulled away for a 81-78 victory over Great Neck South. Terrell Holloway had another big game for Hempstead, scoring the go ahead basket and finishing with 29 points, 5 assists and 7 steals . GNS's Jamel Rahiem had a big game too, also finishing with 29. In the consolation game, Port Washington outlasted host Manhasset 54-46. Chris Ryder had 14 points and 8 rebounds for PW. At the Monsignor McClancy tournament in Queens, St. John The Baptist defeated host McClancy  82-70 to capture 3rd place. Prentice Small finished with 27 points, 10
assists and 7 rebounds

  Island Trees Stuns Massapequa
Any other year, this would have been no contest, but this isn't your average Island Trees team. Shooting, rebounding, defense, senior leadership - they have all the right ingredients, and they showed Class AA Massapequa by pulling away in the 3rd quarter and beating them 76-68. Justin Heisig, who finished with 21 points, led the 3rd quarter charge.                        12/8

        Lawrence Pulls Big Upset
In the biggest upset of the day, Class A Lawrence trailed by one after three, but had a huge fourth quarter to defeat Freeport 60-49. Qwamel Lyerly led the way, scoring 8 of his 23 points in the final frame                              12/8

      LWA In Rebuilding Year
Newsday has an article about LWA's team this season. Much like St. Mary's, they have young talent that may take time to mature and should be a far better team in the 2nd half of the season.

    Bonac Hoops on Fast Track
In coach Ed Petrie's 50 years of coaching high school basketball, he has perhaps not had a team as capable of running the fast break effectively as the 2006-07 Bonackers....... GO TO INDEPENDANT

Hurricanes: Nowhere to Go But Up
When a team plays 19 games in a season and wins only one of them, there could be cause for concern about that team's future. But that doesn't appear to be the case for the Westhampton Beach boys' varsity basketball team................GO TO INDEPENDANT

    Size, Talent, Will Help Tigers
It is going to be hard for Northport to improve on last year's mark. The Tigers went 10-2 (13-6 overall) and won the League II title. In the Suffolk County basketball playoffs Northport made it to the semifinal round before being eliminated by eventual champion Copiague.

                 12/1 Round-up
Islip jumped all over Shoreham - Wading River, rolling up a 14 point lead by halftime and winning by 21. Josh Clarke and Vince Williams led the way for Islip, scoring 18 and 16 points respectively. Austin had 20 for SWR. Newfield came out strong in the 3rd quarter to cut the Harborfields lead to 4, but Harborfields regrouped and held on for a 45-36 win. Alex Favre had a big all around game for the winners, racking up 12 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals. Rocky Point led by 7 after one,  16 at the half and 23 after three quarters in an easy 60-40 win over Miller Place. Tommy King accounted for 28 of those 60 points,  scoring 14 and assisting on 7.  LWA contained their hectic early season schedule, beating Brooklyn Friends 64-30 to improve to 2-1. Max Schillalies looks like he's going to have a big season, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his 3rd straight strong game. Brian Williams also looked good, finishing with 16 points and 6 rebounds. Eric Montpetit free throw gave Eastport SM a 56-55 OT  win over Center Moriches. P. Hayes had 15 points and Montpetit 14.

  St. Dom's and L.I. Getting Dissed !
How does a senior dominated team that finished as the top ranked team on Long Island last year and 8th ranked team in New York State - a team that lost a close game to Christ The King in the State Semifinals and will start a line-up of at least three and possibly 5 D1 college players this year -  not appear in any of the preseason regional and national polls? While CTK is ranked at or near the top in the region? And what about Uniondale? It doesn't help when your hometown newspaper makes ridiculous statements about Long Island no longer being a hotbed for college players. There are almost 40 playing D1 ball this year and 100's playing D2 and below! Like always, we have to prove it on the court Long Island! Its not where we start in the polls, its where we finish!. We'll do our part and make sure everybody hears about it when we do!

        Harborfields Tournament
Harborfields will have it's annual Tip-off Holiday Tournament on Dec 7th and 8th and it looks like a good one. On Dec 7th Walt Whitman will play Hills East at 5 p.m. and in the second game host Harborfields will play Patchogue-Medford at 7 p.m. Consolation and finals 12/8.

   Hills West Has Good Schedule
Half Hollow Hills West has put together a challenging non league schedule this season. They start off in a tournament  at Islip, then play Archbishop Molloy , West Hempstead and Northport - and all on the road ! The only game they host is against Centereach.

  LUHI Independent This Season
LI Lutheran, with a new head coach and at least two high profile transfers this year, has dropped out of the private school IPPSAL and will play as an independent  this season. Taking a look at their schedule though, you'd think they converted to Catholicism because 10 of their games are against CHSAA schools. Their schedule kicks off 12/8 when they face Curtis of the PSAL at the William Floyd Tournament, and then the winner of William Floyd and Mercy in the 2nd round. Then they visit Chaminade, host St. Anthony's and Holy Trinity, and play at St. John's Prep. Then its Baldwin at home and they finish December at the Rim Rocker Classic, where their 1st round opponent is Pleasure Ridge Park HS from Louisville, Kentucky
.
      Upper Room Wins Opener
Upper Room kicked off their 2006-7 season with a  61
- 49 road win over Jamaica of the PSAL. They had four starters in double figures. Corey Jackson had 14, Randell Lyons 13, Jorge Moreno 14 and 8 redounds and Victor Holder had 13. Point guard and Metro Classic All-Star Roberto Lyons had 7 points,  8 assists and 4 steals.

Upper Room Schedule First Rate
Every season, the Upper Room Royals play a tough non-league schedule and this season is no exception. They kick things off Nov. 17th against Jamaica of the New York City PSAL. After a league game, they go on the road against Kellenberg and St. Dominic, host Stony Brook and then back on the road against St. Anthony's and St. John The Baptist. They wrap up 2006 in Phoenix against some of the top teams in the country in The Cactus Jam.

      Bay Shore Takes Challenge
Bay Shore advanced to the Suffolk Class AA finals last year with a very young team, and most observers feel they'll get there again and with a very good chance to advance,  Their non-league schedule and league season will prepare them well. They open up against Brentwood, then host Nassau Class A power Floral Park in the Nassau/Suffolk Challenge, and either an excellent South Side team or young and talented Lindenhurst in the 2nd round. Then they face St. Mary's, Ward Melville and St. Anthony's on a grueling road trip before returning home for a 1st round game against a very good Hempstead team in the Isaiah Stanton Tournament. Their 2nd round game will be against either Suffolk League 1 contender William Floyd or it will be a rematch against Floral Park. Then they'll be no let up once the league season begins 1/3. Suffolk League 2 has three or four strong teams this season, including defending league champ and Class AA semifinalist Northport, who swept the Marauders last season.

                St. Mary's Reloads
St. Mary's has a talented but untested team this season, but that will change in a hurry! The Gaels jump right into it Nov 26th with a game against Boys and Girls HS, expected to be one of the top public school teams in the city this season.  Then on Dec. 7th, they face mighty Christ The King at CTK., and follow that up with match-ups against defending Long Island Public School Class AA Champion Uniondale and Suffolk Class AA finalist Bay Shore. They finish off 2006 first by hosting Federation Class B runner-up Blessed Sacrament and then flying off to Hawaii for the Punahou Christmas Classic. When do they play St. Dom's? They have them at home Jan 16th, and then at their place Feb.13th.

               IPPSAL Shake-Up
The IPPSAL private school league will have a new look this season. Long Island Lutheran has withdrawn from the league, and Our Savior Lutheran, who was considering applying for membership, has decided against it.  The new set-up will have Upper Room , LWA, Kew Forest , Portledge, Solomon Schecter and Waldorf in the 1st Division, and Faith, Lake Grove,Lexington, Knox and Victory Christian in the 2nd. The league had grown in strength and prestige in recent years with the success of LWA and  the emergence of Upper Room. The addition of Our Savior Lutheran and a possible return to glory for LUHI would have only enhanced that. Now, with LWA facing a possible down year after graduating three of the best players on Long island, you have to wonder how competitive the league will be this season. Editors note: We added the phrase "this season' to the end of our article because it was not our intention to imply that the IPPSAL would no longer be a competitive league. We were speaking of this season only. We also changed the wording of the sentence concerning Our Savior Lutheran. They never made a formal application to the league, so to say that they were "scheduled to join" is not accurate

    The Bayhawks Ready To Roll
St. Dominic begins defense of their title as Long Island's #1 ranked team with a home game on 12/1 against NYC powerhouse Grady HS in the Dan Trant Memorial Classic.  On 12/3, they host private school power Upper Room, and then on the 9th, Nassau Class AA contender Elmont in  the Long Island Challenge.  Then it's off to Hawaii to face off against some of the top teams in the country in the Iolani Classic.

      Hornet's Nest In Riverhead?
We were pleased to report that Dominic Savino had accepted the head coaching job at Riverhead, but Coach Savino might have stepped into a bit of a hornets nest by doing so. Its seems Jerry Wiesmann, the previous coach, is very unhappy about losing the job and is making accusations of back stabbing, political maneuvering and discrimination. Wiesman compiled a 147-73 record in his 12 seasons at Riverhead. The teachers union is getting involved in the dispute as well, siding with Wiesmann. The Riverhead News-Review has an in depth article about the whole thing.

The Nassau/Suffolk Challenge played at Bay Shore High School on December 9th has also put together some excellent games. Amityville's Andrew Ayodeji led all scores with 21 points for Suffolk, while Deer Park's Josh Malone had 16 and East Hampton's Mike Russell added 13. Jason Lieberman was tops for Nassau with 18 while Tom Dowling of South Side and Mike Sands of Carey chipped in 9 a piece.

Malverne On Top Of The World !
The Malverne Mules defeated CHSAA State Champion Blessed Sacrament 90-81 to capture the Class B Title at the New York State Federation Tournament of Champions. The Mules rallied to retake the lead after Greg Lott and Stephen Adekunle had both fouled out and then pulled away down the stretch by hitting 8 of 10 free throws. Blessed Sacrament had taken a 65-61 lead early in the 4th quarter, with Lott and Adekunle on the bench in foul trouble, but poor foul shooting by Sacrament allowed Malverne to keep it close and Craig Wilson's basket and two foul shots put the Mules back on top with 6 minutes left. Adekunle picked up his 5th foul with about 5 minutes remaining and the Mules up by one and Lott fouled out with 4:13 remaining and the Mules up by two. Sacrament took the lead 76-75 with just under 3 minutes left, and it looked like trouble for the kids from Long island. But Malverne did not buckle. Williams put them up 80-77 with two foul shots and less than 2 minutes to go and Bates scored on a nice dish from Wilson to put them up five with 1:30 on the clock. A Sacrament 3 pointer cut it to two with 1;06 left, but they never got any closer as Malverne's clutch foul shooting in the closing seconds gave them  the historic win. Craig Wilson was named MVP, scoring 30 points and dishing out 7 assists. He had 10 of those 30 in the 4th quarter.

        LuHi Loses Heartbreaker
The potential game winner was off the mark at the buzzer and Long Island Lutheran fell to Peekskill 64-63 in the Federation Class A Semifinals. The Crusaders outplayed the heavily favored defending champions for much of the game and gave up an eleven point lead.                                         DETAILS                               3/23

         Upper Room Falls Short
The Upper Room Royals rallied from a 14 point 1st quarter deficit to take a one point lead with 2:15 remaining in the game, but did not score again and fell 69-64 to CHSAA Champion Blessed Sacrament in the Federation State Semifinals. Down 11 mid way through the 3rd quarter, David Jack started the comeback with a 3 pointer, followed by a traditional 3 point play by Tracey Lewis, and a steal and fastbreak layup by Randell Lyons to pull the Royals within two.
Sacrament built the lead back to 5 at the end of the quarter, but Upper room was back in the game to stay.   They had chances down the stretch but could not cash in, missing free throws and shots that would have tied the game or given them the lead.                             3/23

Malverne Public School Champions
In a game webcast live here on LIB.com, Greg Lott's putback with 35 seconds left gave  Malverne the New York Public School Class B State Championship!  Ogdensburg had two chances at the end, but missed the front end of a one-and-one with 20 seconds left and had a 3-pointer fall short at the buzzer. Final score was Malverne 44 Ogdensburg Free Academy 42.  Lott battled through a sore knee and foul trouble to put back the winner. Justin Williams was high scorer with 14 and brought the Mules from behind while Lott was on the bench in foul trouble.   LISTEN TO REPLAY   3/17

  Press/Jones Devastate Kings Park
Peekskill's press and star Mookie Jones were too much for Kings Park as the Kingsmen fell 85-51 in the New York State Class A Semifinals. Kings Park trailed by only 7 as the 2nd quarter wound down despite 10 turnovers, but a 3 pointer at the buzzer and 51 second half points by Peekskill ended Kings Park's incredible season. Mookie Jones scored 26 points and had 10 rebounds before exiting with 5:34 left. Mike McSloy led Kings Park with 21.                                                    3/17

    Malverne Rolls Past Hannibal
The Malverne Mules pressed their way to a 53-38 win over Hannibal of Section 3, advancing to the New York State Public School Class B Championship game.  Greg Lott set the pace for Malverne, finishing with 19 points and 9 rebounds and Stephen Adelkunle had 10 points and 11 rebounds.  The Mules will play Sec. 10's Ogdensburg Free Academy  tomorrow at 9 PM for the title.    Copiague Takes Class AA Title
In an exciting duel between two top players and two top teams, Copiague and Richard Byrd defeated Hempstead and Terrell Holloway 68-61 to claim the Long Island Class AA Championship. As the game unfolded though, it didn't look like there would be much drama. Byrd led the Eagles to a six point lead after one and a seven point lead at the half, but then it happened. Byrd picked up his 4th foul and in an instant, turned an almost routine win into a 4th quarter filled with drama. The Tigers and Holloway played their part, making their move as Byrd and the Copiague faithful sat anxiously watching. Then Byrd was back in the game and ....foul!
Done for the day with 2:16 left to play! It was the same scenario that had played out once before this season in Copiague's big win over East Islip. That night, the team rose to the occasion led by Dwight Gibson. Tonight, with the Eagles clinging to a two point lead, it happened again. Gibson hit four big free throws down the stretch and his teammates made the defensive stops and pulled down the rebounds and Copiague was on their way to Glens Falls with 68-61 win.  Byrd finished with 24, Holloway 26 and Gibson with 16.                    3/10

     Friends Takes Class C Title
Friends Academy caught Stony Brook at the half and pulled away in the 3rd quarter for a 56-41 victory and the Long Island Class C Championship.                  3/6
                        NEWSDAY STORY

    This Time Malverne Advances
In a rematch of last years championship game, Malverne led almost the whole way and beat Wyandanch 80-71 to capture the Long Island Class B Title. The Mules understandably focused their defense on denying the ball to Wyandanch star Chris Barber, who beat them almost single handedly last year. When he did manage to get the ball, they quickly double teamed him and forced him to give it up or take a tough shot. He finished with 20, but shot a low percentage and never found his rhythm. His counterpart, Malverne star Greg Lott, got off to a fast start, and his basket from underneath gave the Mules a 19-16 lead at the end of one. Craig Wilson's 3 pointer put Malverne up 25-20 with 5:20 left in the half and it was 31-22 with 3:30 to go after a steal and a hoop by Justin Williams.  But Chris Barber's layup made it 39-32 and Earnest Fells stole the inbound pass and scored to make it 39-34 as the half came to a close. Malverne turned the tables as the 3rd quarter came to a close. Leading by six with under a minute to go, Williams stole the ball and scored and then Glenn Odom stripped the ball on the inbound play and scored and took a hard foul. Up by 10, the officials awarded Malverne two shots and the ball. Odom hit both for a 12 point lead and then a moment later stole the ball again for a 65-51 lead . Two Barber free throw ended the quarter, but the Warrior's suddenly found themselves in a 12 point hole.  It looked like the tide might turn as the 4th quarter got underway.  Back to back drives by Cameron Barber, the second a three point play,  made it 65-58 but Greg Lott pulled up and hit a jumper and the lead was back to nine. Chris Barber's fast break lay-up cut it to seven, but Lott responded again, this time with a putback to make it 69-60 with 3:50 left. Joel Foster scored from underneath for Wyandanch to make it 69-62 and then Cameron Barber drew a foul with 3:33 left and hit one out of two to draw his team within six. Brother Chris gathered in a missed shot and scored and it was a four point game with 2:25 left. Then Cameron stole the ball and dunked it and Wyandanch was within two with 2:07 remaining. After a missed shot and Wyandanch rebound, Malverne's Dariel Williams stepped in an got a steal and was fouled.  He hit both in the one and one to put his team back up by four with 1:50 showing. Fells drew a foul for Wyandanch underneath and hit both shots with 1:39 on the clock to make it 71-69. Then Craig Wilson drew a foul coming out of a time out to make it 73-69 Mules. After a Wyandanch turnover, a spinning move in the low post by Stephen Adekunle put Malverne up six with 53 seconds remaining. Chris Barber drew a foul going the other way, but missed both shots. Cameron rebounded the miss but lost the ball out of bounds and was hit with a technical for protesting the call. Greg Lott hit one out of the two shots for a seven point lead with 46 seconds left and it was still Malverne ball. Lott drew another  foul on the next possession and iced the game by hitting  both shots for a nine point lead. He finished with 26 and Wilson had 19. Cameron Barber finished with 28 for Wyandanch.                                                               3/6

     Jericho Storms From Behind
Jericho trailed Floral Park 36-19 at halftime and stormed back for a 63-58 win and a second straight Nassau Class A Championship. Mike Romanelli capped off the rally and gave the Jayhawks the lead on a 4 point play, draining a 3 pointer and drawing a foul to put the Jayhawks up by one with 3:27 remaining. Billy Butler responded with a drive and Rob Cartmell sank two free throws to put Floral Park back up by three, but Josh Witsell, who led Jericho's comeback and finished with 18 points, made one of two foul shots and then stole the ball and scored and it was even at 56 with 1:35 left. It was Romanelli again at the 1:06 mark, putting Jericho on top with two free throws. Brandin Butler, who finished with 20, drove the lane and drew a foul with 49 seconds on the clock. He hit both shots, and it was 58 all. Witsell went to the line again with 31 seconds left in the game and hit his first, but the second shot didn't fall and the door swung open for Floral Park as it had in the South Side game. This time though it quickly slammed shut as the rebound went a little long and the Jayhawks came up with it. Brian Kahn was now at the line and drained both his free throws with 29.3 remaining to put Jericho up by three. Jericho got the ball back with 15 seconds left after a scramble and disputed call by the officials and Romanelli was sent to the line again and hit two more free throws for the final margin.  3/3   CHAMPIONSHIP T-SHIRTS COMING!

   McSloy's Shot Lifts Kings Park
Mike McSloy's pull up jumper with 1.5 seconds left in the game gave Kings Park a 41-39 win over John Glenn and the Suffolk County Class A Championship. It was Kings Park's first County Championship since 1950.
The Kingsmen had a 10 point lead with 6 minutes left but didn't score again until McSloy's winner. Brendan Ward completed Glenn's dramatic comeback with a putback that tied the score at 39 with 17 seconds remaining.                                                            2/28

  Greenport Puts Up Valiant Fight
Class D Champion Greenport was a heavy underdog going into their game with Class B Champion Wyandanch. Then, when star Ryan Creighton went down early in the first quarter with an ankle injury, things really looked bleak. They trailed 25-14 at the end of the quarter, and looked like it was only going to get worse. Except for one thing. It didn't! In fact, without Creighton and also without Matt Cordes  - another starter and strong player - the Porters fought their way back into the game and took the lead! It didn't last though. The Warriors turned on the afterburners and pulled away for a 68-54 victory. Fred Grace carried the scoring load for Greenport,  finishing with a game high 24 points while the Barber brothers combined for 37 for Danch.       2/28

        LuHi Takes Collegiate Title
One of the fixtures on the private school basketball schedule is the season ending Collegiate Invitational Tournament held in Manhattan.  Some of the top private school teams in the area participate, and the winner is usually a serious contender for the private school State Championship.  This year, the Long Island Lutheran Crusaders were crowned Champions, easily defeating the Kingswood-Oxford School from Connecticut 71-45 in the final. Leading by 10 after 3 quarters, the Crusaders blew it open in the fourth quarter with an outstanding defensive effort. Kyle Sheridan led the way offensively with  8 points in the decisive run. LuHI's Matt Rooney was named the Tournament MVP,  and Kevin Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team.                   2/25

       Malverne Crushes Wheatley
Wheatley played a fantastic first half against Malverne, leading for much of it and trailing by only three at the break. The second half was another story. The Mules outscored the Wildcats by a 29-15 margin, winning the Nassau County/Section 8 Class B Championship by a score of 54-37. Greg Lott had 17 for malverne and Craig Wilson 13.                                                            2/24

  Jericho Too Much For Lawrence
Lawrence was the Cinderella team in this years playoffs, advancing to the semifinals as the 13th seed.  What usually happens though is that sooner or later, Cinderella teams run into the #1 seed. That's what happened to the Tornados, and Jericho wasn't about to be part of any fairytale ending. The Jayhawks have their own dreams this season, and they took one more step toward realizing them with a convincing 71-47 win.  Brian Kahn and Matt Cajuste  led a balanced attack with 13 points each. Lawrence, a likeable team that played with great spirit and clearly has talent, got 17 hard fought points from Quamel Lyerly. Lyerly is a very talented player forced to play out of position for the Tornados.                                                                2/24

    Baldwin Eliminates Uniondale
The teams had played two very close games during the season, with Uniondale coming out on top in both games by a total of 5 points. This time, in the Nassau County Class AA Semifinals, it was Baldwin's turn as the Bruins advanced to the finals with a hard fought 58-56 victory. Chris Maudlin's clutch three pointer with 8 seconds left and a game saving foul by Anthony Lee were the difference. Baldwin led by 3 at the end of one, but Travis Simms hit a 3 pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Uniondale a 29-27 lead going into the locker room. Mike Woods tied it up to start the second half and his 3 pointer from the right side with 1:27 remaining in the 3rd gave Baldwin a 37-35 lead. Uniondale's James Ockimey  tied the game with a 3 pointer from the top of the key to start the 4th but Chris Mauldin responded with a pull up jumper to make it 42-40 Baldwin. James Priestley's emphatic dunk made it 44-42 Uniondale, but Chris Manning came right back with a 3 pointer to put the Bruins back up by one with 6:07 remaining. The teams went back and forth the rest of the way, with  Manning's three pointer with 1:52 left giving Baldwin a two point lead.  Travis Simms gave Uniondale a one point lead when he nailed a three pointer from the right side with 1:26 on the clock.  It was Uniondale ball with 45 seconds left and a one point lead, but they couldn't get off a good shot coming out of a time out and Baldwin regained possession and called time with 21 seconds on the clock. After a missed shot, they got the ball to  Maudlin spotting up and he drained a three with 7.8 seconds remaining to put the Bruins up by two. One last chance for Uniondale, and it looked like they would cash in when two Baldwin defenders fell trying to pressure the ball, but the Bruins only had 4 team fouls and Lee saved the day by deliberately fouling one of the Uniondale players before they could take advantage. So it was Uniondale ball out of bounds with 2 seconds left. They got off a good shot, but it bounded away at the buzzer and their string of 5 consecutive Nassau titles came to an end.                                                     2/23

Wyandanch Repeats As B Champs
Wyandanch captured the Suffolk Class B Championship for the second year in a row with a 73-59 win over Babylon. Chris Barber led the way with 29 pts and 10 assists and Cameron Barber had a double double with 18 rebounds and 12 assists. The role players also stepped up big in the game with Marquis Scott finishing with  10 points and 7 rebounds, James Freeman with
10 points and 5 assists, and Earnest Fells 6 points, 5 Rebounds and 5 assits.                                          2/22

    13 Seed Lawrence Advances
A lower seed finally broke through in the Nassau / Section 8 Playoffs as #13 Lawrence took command in the 2nd quarter and went on to defeat 5th seeded West Hempstead 58-49 in Class A Quarterfinal action. Jerrel Milligan led the Golden Tornadoes with a  career-high 22 points, Conrad Steward had 18 and Quamel Lyerly chipped in 11.                                                           2/21

        Hicksville Hangs Tough
I guess you'd have to say the system worked. Despite starting the season as one of the lower rated AA teams in Nassau, Hicksville earned a playoff spot by dominating their conference and showed they belonged by beating Freeport and battling 4th seed and 15th ranked Baldwin before falling short 52-48. Chris Manning had a real good game for Baldwin, finishing with 15 points, making several key steals and dishing out 5 assists. Danny Franchese led Hicksville with 15 as well.                                                                   2/20

Floyd Over Hills West In OT
In a terrific game, William Floyd rallied from 6 points down in regulation to take a two point lead on a baseline drive by Torek Williams with 15 seconds remaining, but Hills West freshman Tobias Harris wove his way through three defenders and hit a pull up jumper with 1.6 seconds on the clock to tie it. Then in OT, Marvin Lewis  gave Floyd the lead on his basket with 2:13 remaining and John Symonds made it a four point game with two free throws, but Harris responded with a three pointer to make it 51-50 with 26 seconds remaining. Williams then hit two huge free throws for the Colonial's in the one and one to push their lead to three with 26 seconds left. With just 6 seconds on the clock, Hills West's Mike Meglio rebounded a miss and was fouled and went to the line for two shots. He hit his first shot to make it a two point game, and then missed the second and West  grabbed the rebound but their game tying shot from the lane was no good as the buzzer sounded. Symonds finished with 17 points for Floyd and Harris had a game high 29 points for West.                                                                                         2/20
Stony Brook Suffolk C Champions
One of their best players transferred before the season started, but Stony Brook didn't miss a beat, following up last seasons success with a 43-32 win over Mercy for the Suffolk County/Section 11 Class C Championship -  the first county championship in the schools history.  Peter Carmel led the way with 12 points and Mitchell Singer added 10.                                                        2/19.

      Nassau Class C Champions
Friends Academy  defeated East Rockaway to capture the Nassau County/Section 8 Class C Championship. Friends, who split with East Rockaway during the regular season, got off to an early lead and steadily pulled away for a 62-41 win. Alex Petrossian had a huge game, finishing with 21 points and Jon Williams added 14. Matt Owens led East Rockaway with 14. 2/18

          2/17 Playoffs Highlights
Lawrence upset #4 seed Westbury 64-61. The Green Dragons had been playing well even without big men Bruce Chong and David Parker,  but the quartet of Conrad Steward (20pts), Derek Klein (14 points), Jerrell Milligan (12pts), and Quamel Lyerly (10pts) was too much for them.......Roslyn came up with a big win over Great Neck South, leading wire to wire  in a sloppy  game. Maalik Oliver led the way with 20 points and Jason Liberman had 17 points and 18 rebounds. Great Neck South beat Roslyn twice during the regular season.... Seaford gave Jericho a good game before falling 57-49. Brian Kahn led Jericho with 15 points and Matt Cajuste had 13. Seaford's Tim Marchica led all scorers with 16.... Island Trees' 4th quarter rally fell short and they lost 69-64 to Carey. Mike Sands had 40 points for Carey. ...In a terrific game, Roosevelt prevailed over Great Neck North 50-46 in overtime.  Jamal White gave them the lead with a 3 pointer and  Anthony Middleton iced it with free throws. ...South Side led wire to wire and beat Hewlett 69-40.  Tom Dowling had 21 points and Chris Bastian had 19.

                2/15 Highlights
No real surprises as Suffolk finally wrapped up their regular season after weather delays. Copiague pulled away from East Islip behind Richard Byrd's 25 points and Booker Hucks had 27 points to lead Bay Shore over Central Islip. Carlos Malave had 19 as Bellport rallied past Hills West, and Chris Johnson and Chris Barnes led Lindenhurst past Brentwood. (Note: There are actually two games left to be played today in Suffolk).

     Upper Room Soars Past LWA
After 5 straight years of losing to LWA in the finals, the Upper Room Royals played the role of champion to perfection, weathering their young opponent's determined first half rally and then pulling away in the 2nd half for a convincing 65-49 victory and the IPPSAL Championship. Corey Jackson, Victor Holder and Roberto Lyons  led the way for the Royals.             2/15

    Amityville Outlasts Wyandanch
In a see-saw game where the teams took turns making runs, Amityville outscored Wyandanch by 11 in the final quarter to pick up a 10 point win. The big guns were blazing for both teams as Andrew Ayodeji and Ray Jones combined for 44 point for Amityville and the Barber brothers for 56 for Wyandanch. It was the role players though, like Amityville big man Fred Jeter that made the difference. Look for them to do some damage.                                                                                       1/26        Copiague Drops East Islip
Copiague came out with great intensity and looked like they were going to blow unbeaten East Islip right out of the gym.  The Redmen had other ideas, weathering storm after storm to find themselves down only six with 4:04 remaining in the game and Copiague star Richard Byrd headed to the bench with his 5th foul. Byrd had dominated the game and knocked down big shot after big shot and things looked grim for the Eagles without his scoring and leadership on the floor. When play resumed, it seemed those fears might be confirmed as John Klein plunged down the left side of the lane and  made it 53-49. The big home crowd erupted. But that's as close as they would get. Dwight Gibson knocked down a huge 3 pointer, Jordan Barosy hit both ends of a one and one and  a big jumper from the right side, and it was 60-53 with only 43 seconds left in the game. If any Long Island team was going to make some noise at the Rim Rocker this year, you had to figure Elmont had as good a chance as any. They played the roll of contender well in the first quarter, taking a 3 point lead against against a good South Shore team from Brooklyn. But then the bottom fell out. The Spartans scored just two points - that's right, it's not a typo - two points in the 2nd quarter and then with the outcome still in doubt, just 8 in the decisive 4th quarter and lost 58-41. Lindenhurst Win Marred By Fight
A fight between fans erupted in a corridor near the stands with 26 seconds remaining in #10 Lindenhurst's big 68-57 home win over #8 Deer Park. Unfortunately, it forced the game to end prematurely and took some of the focus away from a terrific performance by Lindenhurst's Chris Johnson. Fans from both sides of the court in the packed gym spilled onto the floor, and for a brief moment, it looked like something ugly was about to happen. Fortunately, the security team somehow managed to keep things under control and by the time the police arrived, order had been restored. As for the game, the two teams exchanged leads in the first half, with Lindenhurst surging to the early lead and then Deer Park rallying behind Josh Malone and Stanley Calixte to lead by 4 at the half.          Jericho Holds Off Roslyn
Right now, Jericho looks like the clear cut favorite in Class A in most peoples minds. You would usually expect a clear cut favorite to get off to a quick start
- especially at home -  and cruise to victory  in most of their games.  Its going to be a little different this year though, because Nassau has realigned all of their Class AA and A conferences based on a ranking system. That means Jericho and all the best teams will be playing against other very good teams in each and every game of the season.  No cupcakes. Well,  good teams almost always make runs, just like Roslyn did in the 3rd quarter after trailing throughout the first half. The Jayhawks managed to regroup and pull away for a 54-44 victory, but who knows next time? Especially on the road. Its going to be fun!                                         12/18

Suffolk Teams That May Surprise
Every year, when we issue our first Sweet 16 poll of the season, there a number of teams that just miss the top 16 that some of our voters feel very strongly about. Usually, its teams with good but unknown underclassmen or teams that lost a big star that overshadowed skilled teammates. We'll start with Suffolk County and discuss Nassau tomorrow. Here are a few to keep an eye on in Suffolk that got votes but fell short of the Sweet 16. The first is Hills West. West has a good core of upperclassmen and talented youngsters and has been kicking the stuffing out of some pretty good teams in scrimmages. They should be right there with Deer Park and Bellport in a strong Suffolk League 4. The next is Wyandanch. Although they lost some of star Chris Barber's excellent supporting cast, this years cast, which includes Barber's brother, is as good or better than last years. Defending Suffolk Champion Copiague might end up repeating again this year, although the road will be much tougher. They lost star Sean Smith, but underrated co-star Richard Byrd is ready to step into the lead role and he has a good group of players around him. Finally, the Northport Tigers seemingly came from out of nowhere last season to capture the League II title and advance to the Suffolk Class AA Semifinals before losing to eventual champion Copiague, but they lost their starting backcourt to graduation and one of their top post players. Two strong players have transferred back to Northport from St. Dominic to join leading scorer and Suffolk County Preseason All-Star Ben Atkinson and rugged forward Kevin Gustavson so Northport could be a force again this season.

    St. Dom's Impressive In Opener
St. Dominic hammered Upper Room in their opener 88-54. They weren't perfect by any means. In fact there was plenty for coach Pavinelli to be unhappy about. "It was sloppy" he said after it was over. But the Bayhawks, who still have to sort out who will take Antoine Pearson's place at the point, were still very impressive. Their defense was excellent, and for the most part they did all the right things on offense. But there were turnovers and missed assignments and a lot of the little things that give coaches gray hairs. Their lead was only 8 with 4:20 remaining in the 2nd quarter after a 3 pointer by Upper Room's Corey Jackson, but then they went on a 14 to 2 run to end the half and put the game out of reach. TJ Carey was distributing the ball during the run, finding Markeys Deans and TJ Thomas on the break and Brian Katz spotting up at the 3 point line. The bottom line is, it was the first game of the season and they beat a good Upper Room team by 34 points even though they rotated about five kids in at the point guard position and played their reserves for a good part of the second half. Very impressive.  12/2     PHOTOS

       Jericho Hammers Calhoun
Jericho gave a rude welcoming to new Calhoun Coach Marty Harrison. Its was 9-8 Calhoun with 2:51 remaining in the 1st quarter, and suddenly 17-9 Jericho at the end of the quarter. It got worse from there for the home team. Jericho's presses and traps led to numerous turnovers and fast break baskets, and the Jayhawks rolled to 70-41 triumph over the Colts.  Brian Kahn finished with 14 points even though he sat out most of the second half, as did Rob Ilch, who finished with 13.      PHOTOS  12/1

             Kellenberg Can Play !
We weren't expecting much from Kellenberg this season. The program has been in a bit of turmoil, and they went into this game against a good Upper Room team with a new coach and missing two good players that had transferred out to other schools. But the new coach is a good coach, and the kids that stayed can play and Kellenberg went out and beat Upper Room 68 to 62. They led pretty much wire to wire too and only a late rally by the Royals made it close. Balanced scoring for Kellenberg: Matt Milella had 13 points and Chris Lyons and Kevin Cunningham both had 11 points. Center Kevin Milella pulled down 14 rebounds.
Corey Jackson, who led Upper Room's late comeback, finished with a game high 27 points..    PHOTOS 12/1

          Early Season Action
Central Islip held Ward Melville to 10 first half points en route to a 46-30 victory in the season opener for both teams. Chris Benton had 17 points and Chris Duncan 13 rebounds for CI. In another early game, Patchogue-Medford stormed back from a 14 point halftime deficit to beat Port Jefferson 49-46. Rodney Nicholson's steal and layup gave PM the lead for good with 45 seconds remaining (11/30)

Nassau New Ranking System
       County Moves To Ability System
Utilizing a new procedure that ranks every AA and A team in the county, Nassau conferences will now be set up to pair off teams judged to be of similar abilities. The goal is to have consistently competitive games at all levels throughout the conference season. The resulting realignment  divides Nassau's 20 class AA teams into four conferences of five teams and its 29 Class A teams into five conferences of 5 teams and one of 4 teams.
Conference AA1 will now have the top five ranked AA teams in Nassau County, AA2 will have those ranked 6-10, AA3 11-15 and AA4 16-20. Conference A1 will have the top five ranked class A  teams, A2 numbers 6-10 and so on down to 29. Conference A5 will be the conference with 4 teams. The rankings are based on a formula that takes into account a team's record over the past 4 years, plus the evaluations of a panel of coaches and of the team's own coach.
Teams will play teams within their own conference twice and then teams from another conference once for a total of 13 league games. AA1 will play their additional league games against AA2, and AA3 will play theirs against AA4. In class A, it will be A1 vs A2, A3 vs A4, and A5 vs A6.
Come playoff time, adjustments will be made that will compensate for strength of schedule and prevent highly ranked teams from being excluded from the playoffs because of mediocre records. To give you an extreme example, if rankings hold true and the higher ranked team always wins, the first place team in Conference A5 could be undefeated in league play, having played only teams with low rankings, while the last place team in A2, a much higher rated team, could lose all their games in league play having played only against the highest ranked teams in the county. How will the adjustments be made? That is still being finalized but its safe to say that more teams will be taken from the higher rated conferences.

  Small Sinks NYC At Metro
Prentice Small from St. John The Baptist stepped up to the free throw line with 5 seconds left in the game seeking redemption. St. John's signee Malik Boothe from Christ The King had just burned him badly to give New York City a 1 point lead. A determined Small brought the ball up court with Boothe hanging all over him and the clock winding down. Then Boothe went for the steal and suddenly ....... a whistle! Foul on Boothe! So there he was, toeing the foul line with the game in his hands and the hostile New York City crowd giving him an earful. Swish! Game tied!  Time out, New York! Small never left the line. He focused on the rim through the whole time out while the two coaches huddled with their players. It seemed he never even moved a muscle.  Teams back on the court now and........ swish! Two big free throws and the Suburban team is up by 1! But there was still time left. The clock moved towards zero as New York City raced down the court and then the dream ending was shattered by another Christ The King star - Andrew Gabriel.  His jumper from the left side sailed through the air and into the basket just as the buzzer sounded,  giving New York City a dramatic victory! But wait...... The refs are huddling...... No basket! Time had been called because of a problem with the clock! No basket! Game over, right? No!  Put 0.5  back on the clock, the refs say. NYC inbounds the ball....This time at the buzzer it's Boothe from the corner ......... No! It rolls off the rim! Game over! A very dramatic win. Peekskill's Mookie Jones led all scorers with 19 points and deservedly brought home the MVP trophy, but make no mistake - Prentice Small won the game. He finished with 12 to lead Long Island scorers, while Stephen Priestly had 8 and some solid board work, Brian Hutchinson had 7 and also rebounded well. Teeng Akol finished with 5 and some nice boards, while Andrew Beinert played solid defense but didn't get many touches, hitting 2 of his 3 shots for 4 points. Chris Obi and Matt Cajuste each had a basket in limited playing time, and Roberto Lyons did not score in limited playing time.
